Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What brands provide UPF/SPF rated jerseys?

Looking for lighter or summer weight cycling jerseys that have at least 30 UPF. Surprising hard to find.

It seems like the current trend is the opposite; Jerseys that actually require that you use sun tan lotion underneath them. I wonder if your best bet is to find a base layer to use underneath your jersey for uv protection.

I did find Morvelo which shows spf30 for most of their jerseys. I don't want or sometimes hard to reach to put lotion all over my back if I don't have to. I think many jerseys have sun protection but it is strange that the makers don't test or provide this information?

Are most jerserys ok to get suntan lotion on without staining the colors?

I think most cycling stuff is nowadays. It used to be the big thing in their advertising. But the marketing departments moved on to other things as we got tired of good, better, best being only a couple SPF from each other. <grin>.

But I might be wrong.

That I know of, you're correct. If you get some of the fancy mesh jerseys, you'll want to apply sunscreen underneath, but most stuff provides 30-50spf, iirc.

There are silk weight and lighter base layers that are UPF 50 and comfortable in the summer. When I've had enough sun and need to hide for a bit this is what I do.

Thank you for the information on Voler. Yes, they seem to indicate, some of their faster jerseys have the SPF fabric on just the shoulder and arm panel areas.

Check the manufacturers' websites. The good ones already list this info. The retailers may or may not include those details.

Even my favorite ultra-thin and soft jersey fabric -- the Garneau Lemmon 2 -- is listed as UPF/SPF 50. That seems to be accurate. I don't wear sunscreen anymore (long story, health experiment, pending lab tests for confirmation). So I tan quickly around the jersey, but even the thin mesh fabric doesn't seem to allow any sun through during my midday Texas spring and summer rides. If I was concerned about sun exposure I'd get the long sleeve version. It should be quite comfortable, even in summer. The Lemmon 2 fabric is so soft and comfy, it's hard to describe -- like ultra-fine cotton or merino wool, not at all like most poly fabrics.

The new Lemmon Art jersey is rated 30. Haven't tried it yet. But I probably will.

My various Pearl Izumi Elite Pursuit Speed aero jerseys appear to be higher rated for sun resistance, SPF/UPF 50+, presumably due to the thicker fabric used on the shoulders and shoulder yokes. These don't breathe quite as well, but supposedly the fabric makes them more aero.

Anyway, check the makers' websites. If they're reputable makers the info will be specified.
