Lowest pressure widest clincher tires for old canno

Hi, I wanted to make my 26 in cannondale F400 hard tail a little more comfortable in the saddle and thought I should investigate lower pressure wider tires. I have a DLR 80 front shock on a CAAD2 frame from 2000. Currently I have a 2.2 in front and a 1.9 rear (Bontrager). I mainly ride trails and some single track. Local bike stores mainly have 27.5 and 29 in stock so I thought I would ask the internet for advice. Using v brakes so tubeless not an option.
Thanks, happy to be redirected if this is answered better elsewhere.
