I absolutely love this thing. Another note: I had always thought that the word tandem meant two people. I have now been enlightened that it described the arrangement of riders (fore and aft) and can apply to more than two. This post both gave me a smile and motivated me to learn something new. Thanks.
But, the price is a little steep.
I would have to consider the gearing though. Probably taken directly from a motorcycle. Good for a parade, but not fun for commuting.

I'm still trying to figure out the driveline layout. The big motorcycle chain seems to go forward some distance, but not all the way to the captain's chainring. The chain seems to catch some of the chainrings "in passing" without actually making a wrap.

Then I'd have to find 5 people to ride with that can reach the pedals.

Even with a passenger on the Flintstone-XtraCycle deck, that thing is $500 / seat. And the overall construction.... stoker handlebars appear to be from some gardening implements or the like.
Yeah I noticed the driveline strangeness. That aft-most stoker ring definitely functions more as a tensioner/idler than a drive ring. Would also explain the... uh... "timing".

I worked in a bike shop that had one of those homemade tandems, but ours had seats for TEN people. It hung in the front window. I never saw anyone ride it. Of course I was told it steered like a bus, and that was no joke.

I also worked in a shop that had a many rider tandem in the window. It was gone before I started working there. In my mind it was for 10 people, but sometimes you remember things from when you were a kid that are much bigger than you think. Maybe it was really 6 or 8. Maybe it was 10. It took up the whole front window.
I had asked about it when I worked there but no one knew where it went.

I think at least some mini-bikes use the same 1/2" pitch (but wider) chain that bicycles use. So it may catch the bicycle teeth just fine as long as it is kept from twisting.
Looking at the rear end, it is clearly a motorcycle or minibike sprocket&chain, and looking at coming out the front it is clearly a bicycle sprocket and chain.
Looking at the crank, 3rd from the front, 4th from the back, one can see the motorcycle chain clearly wrapping around the outer chainring. My guess is they have two chainrings on that crank, and it is the start of the bicycle chain off of the innner sprocket.
A bunch of tensioners keep the chain pressed onto the cranks, although the 2nd from the back appears to have the chain either riding on an inner sprocket, or off the sprocket completely. However, one would expect the top chain line to be similar to the bottom, and that is where most of the power comes anyway.

That Sputnik is a great deal. I would buy it in a heartbeat if it was close to me. Just give it a good washing with some strong soap.

The owners sold the shop, and the new owners now own about three or four shops. Gaylen "Lenny" Preheim, one of the owners at the time, died, unfortunately. RIP. He and I butted heads a lot, but he was a great mentor to me and many others.
