Finally made it out to one of the lowkeys! I had planned to do Montebello but never RSVP'd and then it filled up. I had planned to do Sierra but it was cancelled. So I wasn't about to let a few sprinkles deter me from East Dunne (aka Henry Coe)
This was my first bike ride in a week which is unusual for me since I usually do 60-80 miles of commuting each week. But this week my bike had been in the shop getting some new parts: Ultegra shifters and a dura-ace rear derailer. The lowkey event was my first ride with the new parts. I hadn't even gone for a small test ride around the block.
Luckily there was a 6 mile ride from the registration area in downtown Morgan Hill to the start of the timed climb out by Anderson Lake. This allowed me to get a feel for the new shifters. The throw is significantly shorter than my old ones but takes more pressure.
At the starting line I placed myself into the second wave of 20 riders and just happened to be near the front of this group. The waves were staggered 3 minutes apart and I really didn't expect to catch anyone from the first group. Once our wave started, I kept a pretty brisk pace and fell in behind two other riders for a couple minutes. Then the road pitched up a bit and they slowed and I maintained speed and got out in front.
I stayed in front for a few minutes with my heart rate in the low 180s and I knew it wasn't sustainable. I did catch a couple guys from the first group but was reeled in by I think 4 people from my wave before reaching the finish. Finished 22 out of 86 which is roughly the same position as I finished my one LKHC last year (faster than about 3/4 of the group). This is a little disappointing since I expected some improvement in the past year. But it was still a fun time and I can't wait for the Hicks/Umunhum climb in 3 weeks!

I was way sick on Saturday with a cold, so I choose to stay in. Felt OK on Sunday and did the A-Ride, which turned out to be a century and probably 50 miles further than I should have ridden while sick. Feel kind of crappy today. Am considering Welch Creek climb next week.

I've been shooting the LKHC this year with a new 135 f/2 lens, usually at f/2 or 2.2, and I am really pleased with the results. The only thing better would be the 200 f/2 IS which I would have a really hard time justifying to the management :-)

excellent results. can't wait to see the batch from next week.. where are you thinking of setting up?
it wasn't too bad. i got caught about 5 miles in, camped out under a tree, and occasionally had to wipe down the lens. otherwise, was dressed for the weather and pretty comfy.

Not sure where I'll set up. Last time I was on Welch Creek I was riding my bicycle (pronounced, "being humiliated") during the 2007 LKHC series and I don't remember much (oxygen debt?). I recall that above the finish area there are some nice views into Sunol/Ohlone, but I probably won't go there because at the actual finish is a big ugly stucco wall. I'm thinking about heading for the top of the 18% section as things should be pretty well strung out by there. But I'm not sure what the background views will be like there.

that would have been my thought too. haven't been on welch creek but that looks like a spot where people will be grimacing. i'll start working on my fake smile now.
