I mis-typed a bit there, the trails are 15 minutes from my house, but adding in the time of dressing, then getting all my stuff together and putting in in the truck is at least a 30 minute affair on a good day.
Also, if you are looking in to a fat tire bike, have you priced the tires for those at all?
I cringe when I have to ride my cheap ass Kendas on pavement. Ain't no way I'd want to ride a pair of ~$100+ knobbies on pavement for any appreciable amount of time.

If I want a couple hours of solo climbing or spinning from home I can take that bike and keep the wear off my road bike and be able to go anywhere, dirt or bad road.
I have thought about getting a gravel bike because some friends have them and there are some fire roads I could ride to on the road and not have to hump a 32 pound mtb to get there.
One of my friends put drop bars on an old hardtail mtb and that thing works for all kinds of stuff, depending on the wheels he uses that day.

There's a promotional video that Union Pacific shot back close to the end of the Steam Era on the Big Boys, which if I remember correctly showed not only two big boys double-heading up one of the passes in the Rockies, but also a THIRD Big Boy pushing from the rear. Imagine having to coordinate all that! Three ginormous steam engines, all run with mechanical throttles that really were just valves for the steam, all trying to exert just the right amount of force, so that, for example, the second engine in front wasn't simultaneously pushing the lead engine and pulling the train. Three engine crews, working together, with the last guy in line a mile away. With diesels, as I understand it, you need one engine crew because the other engines are all just slaved to the first.

I wouldn’t put cheap tires on my car, either. Probably be close to a grand when that time comes.

My ex had a Hyundai which we put a lot of miles on. After using the cheapest tires I could find for years I bought an expensive set of Michelins for it and it made a huge difference in the way it drove.
If I were just using a car around town for short trips I would go as cheap as I could. I even bought recaps years ago.

Access to suitable riding has traditionally been one of the big reasons that I've been reluctant to get an MTB/fattie. I'm not really a drive-to-a-ride kind of guy - that whole process adds enough hurdles and stress that it's just not something that I want to do other than on special occasions.
If I'm riding from home, I'm about 6 miles from the usual meet-up locations - on a road bike, easy peasy. Bundled up for below freezing temps and rolling on big knobbies? Eesh - getting out of the door and riding there and back is probably enough to scratch that get-out-of-the-house itch. If I were to head out for a solo ride, which would probably be more frequent, it would either be sticking to the bike paths or riding ~7 miles each way to get to some wooded trails.

65° and breezy at ride start today. I was thinking I wanted long sleeves when I opened the front door, but figured I'd better tough it out so that I can better handle normal weather without extra clothing.

I have trail access almost in my back yard, I’d love to try MTB but my wife has expressly forbidden it.
