Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pros don't need to deal with changing a tire on a tubular. They grab another bike or another wheel. Most of us need to fix our tires if we have a flat. Clinchers are more practical and the GP4000 is a great clincher.

Carbon, I think you mis-interpreted the question. I think the OP is asking - since the GP4000 clincher is so popular, why don't the pros use the Tubular version?

Instead, they tend to use the Competition

The competition is lighter.

Good question. The standard answer is Pros use whatever their sponsor gives them. But, that's not always the case. Pros can insist on a specific tire (and often do).

I have been using the Vittoria Corsa CX, but a LBS says they have been seeing more & more trouble with them (new manufacturing?) lately. It's a shame, 'cause I get them for a good price - $57 shipped. Instead, they recommend Continentals. I'm looking for a comparable Conti tire and can get the Competitions for $88.

So, if anyone does have experience/opinions or a cheaper source, that'd be great.

Your are right. I didn't read it that way.

yup, i was using the gp4000s clincher and recently changed to tubular and gotten myself a gp4000 tubs. So far I am good with it, but was just wondering why did the pros choose the competition over the gp4000. Probably after my gp4000 wears off, I will try the competition and find out the answer myself.. =)
