Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Accidental first century

Went out to ride a dress rehearsal for an upcoming 140km gran fondo that's coming up; I'd ridden it last year as well, but the course has been changed substantially, so I was following a cue sheet in some rural areas I'd never explored. A couple of wrong turns as fatigue started to hit in the back third meant a fair bit of backtracking, and as I finally struggled to my driveway I saw the trip meter advance past the magical 161km - I'd accidentally done not only my longest ride ever, but also my first imperial century! I'd call it a lucky accident, since I doubt I'd have planned to ride that far, at least not right now... What a satisfying feeling!

Mine was on accident, too. Planned to ride out of town to a lake, chill out, head back. 60 miles, mostly back roads. Back roads that were closed. So I had to backtrack. Being stubborn, I decided to go to the lake anyway. Got lost again, finally made it, and then immediately had to head back because of the time. Did 110. Oops.

I was so damned tired of pedaling.

Pretty awesome actually...to accidentally roll 100 imperial miles. My but usually is pretty good at reminding me of any miles over about 75.

I'm calling bull. You saw you'd wind up at "only" 99 miles but made a "wrong turn" just so you can say you rode 100 miles.

Ha, my biggest ever ride ('only' 138km) was also an accident. I was on my way home when I saw a friend on his bike, so I turned around and rode another 40km with him.
