Advice ref gear range on hybrid bike

Hi all,

First post on this site. I am an occasional cyclist planning to buy a hybrid to replace MTB. I want it to cope with some steep hills and would like some advice an gear range. Does a 27 gear Alivio set up have a greater range than 20 gear Deore or is is just more gears covering the same range (hope that’s the correct terminology)? The bikes I am considering are:

Giant Roam 1 2019
  • Rear Derailleur - Shimano Deore , Shadow+
  • Front Derailleur - Shimano Deore ,
  • 700 wheels.

Pinnacle Cobalt 3 2020
Rear Derailleur Shimano Alivio M4000 9 Speed
Front Derailleur Shimano Shimano Altus M371 31.8mm
700 wheels

I hope this is sufficient info and would appreciate advice on pros and cons of both set ups. Thanks

Thanks dedhed

Thanks dedhed, that’s a useful link. Currently a little sure how to interpret, but will do some research.

The pinnacle will have more options and has a significantly lower granny gear at 36x22 compared to 32x42. However, Alivio and Altus will probably feel mechanically inferior to Deore.

Here’s what the gearing looks like. The gearing for the triple is actually a 10 speed because the calculator doesn’t have a listing for an 11-36 9 speed cassette and I’m too lazy to go look it up. But the take away from link is that that triple has a wider range and a tighter selection within that range.

Component wise, there’s a little bit of a difference but it’s not a significant difference.
