I hear you. I was a moderately decent TTist (emphasis on "was") then i lost the desire to kill myself so much. But if i break 5:30 for a half Iron, I am going to upgrade my old Shiv to a new TT/tri bike (that purchase will be a fully rational one, driven entirely by performance).

The Timemachines are sweet! One of my first road bikes wasa BMC Streetfire - BMC has come a long way since!

So i actually ended up buying a frame.

The background - I wasnt really looking to purchase immediately (given that I just bought a Venge Pro with CLX 64s wheels 3 weeks ago), but was merely toying with the idea of getting a climbing/training bike to go with the Venge. And I wasnt looking to spend too much for this bike - so was thinking something mid-end. The Orbea i started off with was going to be a fun alternative to my stable of mostly black bikes, but I was also considering a Giant TCR (killer value) and Trek Emonda SLR (super light).
Then I came across a killer deal on a R5 frameset on Bike24.de, and ended up pulling the trigger.



I am gonna take some time building this up. Likely gonna get Hunt wheels and some sort of integrated bar+stem with internal cabling, but still undecided on the groupset. Leaning towards either a Force eTap or pulling the Ultegra Di2 off the Venge and upgrading THAT to Di2 (will depend on whether I decide to go all Shimano or all SRAM with my bikes - been a SRAM guy all the way, so far).

Haha I ordered the same frameset from Bike24 on November 25th and still waiting for the damn thing to arrive. Nearly $100 in shipping charges with no tracking from a third rate carrier like DHL. When it does arrive (hopefully), I plan on building mine with Dura Ace 9170 di2, with already purchased Enve 5.6 disk wheels and Enve SES aero cockpit. I'll post some pics when it arrives.

Damn, so that 15-30 day delivery estimate is true. Oh well..I am in no hurry anyway, so I can wait.

I am really torn on whether to go with an all-out build (DA or Red AXS) or more value (Force / Ultegra Di2). Wheels will also vary based on that. Leaning towards the latter at the moment, as that fits my needs, but a top-end build is also very appealing.

What are you doing for the cockpit? I'd like an integrated bar which lets me route the cables out of the stem, for the.least amount of exposed cabling.

Personally not a fan of SRAM. You can't go wrong with Ultegra Di2, easily the best high end drivetrain value in the industry. Merlins right now has the best prices for DA 9170 and Ultegra 8070 hydraulic grouptsets. I love the flared Enve SES aero bar with the Enve SES aero stem and will use it on this bike. I don't think the bike will be super light but should come in mid to high 15-lbs with pedals. Not too bad for a disk bike with aero wheels and cockpit. BTW check out the weight difference in the hydraulic group sets below.

This would be a tough choice; the Klipschorns are - hands down - the finest sounding home speakers I have ever heard. They also retail for around $13,000/pr.

The F10 is one of the sexiest and fastest bikes I have ever seen, but have never had the opportunity to ride.

Given the option, I would probably opt for the speakers, but I wouldn't rule out the Dogma...

Do you happen to know if these groupset prices also factor in battery, cabling and controller weights? Looking at the chart, i would guess not - and that in practice, a Red eTap AXS is the same weight as the DA.

My main issue is Dura Ace is that the shifters dont feel as comfortable, and i dont particularly like the shift levers, compared to the SRAM mechanism. I need to actively think about the shifting: it isnt as intuitive. Of course, given that i have a decade of SRAM usage built into my muscle memory, it could just be that i need to get used to it.

Another factor in favor of Force on the R5 is cleaner wiring. Purely an aesthetic thing, but there it is.

I don't know the answer to that but if you head to Trek's website you will get your answer. Trek is one of the few manufacturers who publishes the weight of their bikes. Listed below are identical Emonda's but with different drivetrains.

In addition, I am seeing the Emonda SL 7 DIsk eTap at 17.12-lbs and the Emonda SL 7 DIsk (Ultegra Di2) at 16.76-lbs. Between 100-200 grams difference.

Did you see the MotorTrend Head2Head video pitting ICON’s FJ44 against a MB G65? Obviously an FJ isn’t a Bronco, but the builder and the bits are the same - grossly exaggerated engine output and a truck that can’t turn well at speed. Sadly, it causes me great pause on an otherwise beautiful product.

Agreed -- I was a huuuuuge C&V aficionado until I took a test ride on this and was sold --- took me a few days to figure out a way to scrounge up the sizable cash outlay, -- but it was in my garage within a few days nonetheless

Cant even say with a straight face that my average speeds on familiar loops are appreciably faster , but dang this bike is fun to ride

There's a chance that something really good will happen in my professional career this spring. It's not in my hands, but if it happens, I've promised myself this bike (or very similar) as a reward. The good thing would be both a sign of accomplishment and financially rewarding. Probably won't happen. But if it does....

Lots of pretty bikes above, but this is special. She wanted it, dent and all above any other. But then, we like vintage stuff.

This was a 1993 with that weird BB for my wife - just got married.
I just rebuilt her as a Christmas present for my wife. Now weighing in @14#, I could get to 13# with several changes (pedals, saddle, cables, cassette) but will likely stick close to this and change the pedals (complicated).

Junior is dying to ride it.

That is how she fell. I'm into light builds.

In this case I think the spindle is old square Ti. The fork is pretty light - all carbon, no alloy tube, no race. Some Ti bolts and alloy ones. A 1X. Those wheels are the lightest anywhere. That crank is also very light and big guys used to break them. My wife is 130# and I doubt will break it.

This is for nostalgia, so I likely will only do some of the below, but it is mostly what got the green bike to 12#. That MASI is !2# with Dura-Ace steel spindle cranks. I could have taken the MASI into the 11s with these cranks.
How to get it to 13#...and give up some comfort and performance. Savings are approx.
-Replace seat with GELU - 70g - save 100g
-Put RECON cassette - save 100g
-Use Power Cords - save 50g
-Use Ti skewers like KCNC - save 80g
-Extralite stem - save 50g
-Wrap bars to brakes and remove padding - save 20g
-saw off/swap seat post with alloy (extralite or KCNC) save 50g
-Use KCNC brakes - save 150g
-Replace pedals with Dura-Ace pedals - save 50g


With front shifting, pedals - ready to ride.
