I pretty much use a liner with a nice pair of Winter Pearls for most/all weather albeit bought a pair of Chinese "Bar Mitts" a couple of years ago for flat bar. Yes, they are bulky but you most definitely do not need a pair of winter gloves while your hands are on the bars. I was on my Fat Bike here on the trails in Chicago the other day when it was -2F. I rode for over 2 hours and my hands came nothing close to cold. They were quite toasty actually and I had on a thin Pearl Izumi glove liner with a Performance thin Neoprene glove. I could easily move my hands about within the confines of the Mitt and had no restrictions at all. I agree with the above post if those Mitts are on Drops. Your hands get so warm that you can easily take them out for a bit to change your hand position. These things are keepers. My commuter is fixed with flipped and chopped bars so I am asking the "Boss"*(**) to possibly make me a Neoprene set for them r/t the odd angles.

I have bar mitts and lobster gloves. Don't regret either. The bar mitts are for when it's really cold -- below 20F. The lobster gloves work fine down until then. (Of course I'm in Kansas where, this past week of 0-10 degree weather notwithstanding, it's usually 20-30 all winter. YMMV.)

I've never biked in weather that was too cold for bar mitts and a decent set of gloves. I think they would be good down to 0 degrees or possibly below. (It's usually other parts of my body that start being problematic.)

I just generally give up on biking much below 20. I have winter gear that will work down into the teens but it just takes too long to put on, I feel restricted and bulky, and you can't escape the wind around here. The wind is really what saps my will to live. I biked 30 miles to my in-laws house on christmas eve in about 20 degrees with a 10-15mph headwind and it felt like I biked 60 miles.

bar mits are the bomb!

30 degrees and riding with no gloves! However having gloves with is a good thing!

I also feel that with bar mits and thinner gloves I have more control of my bicycle. (drop bar or flat bar)

I want to plug my buddy's company Gupgum Gear (made in the USA). I love these pogies, here's a pic of my set up on a -12F day. My hands get warm when using these pogies.

I'm also happy using PI Pro gloves (without pogies); however, I'm known to run much warmer than average.

This is from the Frozen Fatbike Forty ... -9F at the start up to 10F at the end of the race - 46 mile ride (5-1/2 hours)

I probably should have mentioned I bit the bullet and bought the Bar Mitts, as I was moving to a place lacking in bike shopping options. Had them out on Sunday at 5F, and the same SealSkinz gloves that my hands were freezing in the previous ride were more than adequate over an hour or so, pretty much sweaty at the end of the ride Time will tell if they continue to be suitable, but they appear promising.

used the lobster gloves + the bar mitts. worked out fine. wish the gloves weren't so snug, cuz a little humidity & they are harder to put on. 19 degrees to start had to breath into the gloves to warm up my thumbs to start but after a little while all was cozy. brought thinner gloves but was having fun with the lobsters so didn't switch. ended the ride in 30 degrees I think. this combo would be great in that recent crazy sub-zero weather, no problem. bar mitt bonus is shelter for your gloves when you stop

looks like the same construction & fabrics as their lobster gloves. pricey but tempting!

I think they are the same materials, just different finger configurations. I would like the lobster style better. OTOH, I find my thumbs suffer the most and only pogies help for thumbs (gloves/mittens always leave the thumb all by itself).

PI knows what they are doing with winter gear! I was skeptical for many years, but I found these gloves on close-out and I'm now big a PI fan.

I literally have boxes of gloves. I do live in a winter wonderland

But, as wind chill was approaching -40F (and C) this morning, I'm not certain I am going to need lighter gloves anytime soon!

I have a pair of old Eddy Bauer mittens from back in the days when they sold work and hunting gear for arctic climates. They are goose down insulated with a sheep skin back and look like a boxing glove. They are fine by themselves down to about 0 F.

I haven't worn them alone for several years. My wife bought me a pair of 45NRTH Cobra Fist bar mits. My winter commuter is a flat bar MTB with spike tires and hydraulic disk brakes. They are good alone down to maybe 10 F. Below that, I keep adding layers. The Bauer mittens and the Cobra Fists take me down to -35 F.
