Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Allegedly yes; I have my doubts that it's measurable across a large sample size and not just high-mileage riders taking care of their nice equipment, and lots of starter bikes with 105 being ill-maintained.

What model was your Jamis?

I had a Ventura Comp for a while that I really liked.

I've got downtube shift 10 speed Dura-Ace on the Trek and every time I think about doing something different with it I feel like it will be a downgrade.

I feel like the bike wants to wear a triple crank and bar end shifters, but long cage DA can be hard (and expensive) to find.

Smoke was so bad here I drove to the next valley because club #2 had a ride scheduled but only 7 showed up. It wasn't as bad but once we were 10 miles out the coughing started so we turned back.
There is so much smoke I haven't seen the sun for days. Sometimes you can see an orange ball but there is so much smoke over Southern California that it has lowered the temperature 10-15 degrees from predicted.
One of the fires is now burning in the area where I have been riding on Wednesdays.

They have a ride scheduled tomorrow at the coast north of here. I'd hate to drive 70 miles to find out it's too smokey to ride there It seems any local riding is out.

I have a 7800 bike and it is wonderful, but still more effort to shift than my 105 bike. Probably a matter or less cable housing, though.

Broad question. Since you're a bit familiar with Chattanooga I could make general comparisons to the city 100 miles downriver from here. It's

--~2-3 degrees cooler
--slightly more populous, more spread out (Chattanooga is kind of "landlocked" by ridges)
--less "southern" (but still politically conservative [])
--a university town (especially sports-wise)
--closer to the mountains
--decent cultural amenities for its size (zoo, music, etc.)

As far as cycling goes, there's no velo way or MUP riding worth mentioning. So you either got to pick your spots/times to ride, or get used to riding with traffic.

We aren't doing Halloween this year, simply because Trick or Treaters are basically outlawed. If I can't legally scare the **** out of some kids, I'm just not going to play.
