I spent way too much time going through the 80 pages for inspiration for the build direction so figured I may as well contribute. 1986 custom 62st/59tt Marinoni TT funny bike. I don't know much about vintage time trial bikes but always loved funny bikes aesthetically. I just tossed parts bin parts on to "size it up". The Aprebic aluminum fork is a later addition from the original Marinoni from my understanding. The original order form says it was 26 front - but it might be generically interchangeable with 650c.

Nice looking frame for a "parts" bin build.......Marinoni frames ride very well, looking forward to seeing how it progresses. Please keep us posted.

It's December 9th, 1962 (a time of year when nobody sets records), and British National Independent Pursuit Champion John Woodburn is on the road from Cardiff, Wales to London aboard the revolutionary Moulton Speed. As he flashed past Oxford Bypass, Alex Moulton and Sir Alex Issigonis cheered him on. He hit 50mph down High Wycombe and rolled across the line in London for a total of 162 miles in 6 hours, 43 minutes and 29 seconds, beating the old record by 18½ minutes.

John Woodburn with Alex Moulton:

For tubular tires, they usually called them 26" instead of 650c. But they are the same.
Nice score on the Marinoni!

This makes sense! The original 1986 order form scan I got from Marinoni had a lot of scribbles and short hand - the 26 would make sense in that context. Especially assuming it'd be built around tubulars at the time.

I know; it's a late reply. But, this is just too funny.

You said that "Smart people are so refreshing these days", three posts after you said "Your the man". LOL - was this on purpose to troll, or do you not know that it is "you're" (i.e. "you are")? You should get your knuckles tattooed with "your next"; then people can ask "My next what?". ROTFL. No regerts buddy; no regerts.

Can't remember if I posted my funny bike.Done over 25K on this beast. Columbus steel, AX brakes/levers, Brompton 90mm front hub on wheelchair 'Junior' front rim/clincher. Sugino crank, Look pedals, DA mech and selector, ITM bars, levers, Brooks 'Swift' saddle, Cinelli gooseneck and don't remember aero post. I have literally broken every item on this bike except the frame.
It originally had tubs front and back but they cost over 100 bucks a puncture as you can't get cheap sew-ups anymore, I still have the rims and I think a few tub spares. Originally it had the three bar Ultegra groupset thruout, even the hubs. They all eventually broke, wore out.

Hit a pothole at 15 mph....ouch. Hit a pothole at 25mph and things break.

One peculiarity on riding a funny bike in winter. The sweat off your brow falls directly onto the front brake caliper and re-freezes. Guess what happens when you then try to brake. It is anything but funny.

Sorry just re-measure the front hub. Wall to wall 40mm, OLN 75mm. Very narrow indeed.

"...vast amount of work, as you have proven.....!
Not really.
Once a year the local bike club holds various long distance races around here on a Sunday. I believe 12 and 24 hour time trials is a favored torture attracting many victims. The route intersects my work commute. Some dude rode a Lotus Type 110 replica (Chris Boardman's Hour record bike) in the 24 hour race. He did more than 600 miles i.e. averaged more than 25 mph for 24 hours.
My efforts are merely chicken feed to them.

It is interesting when you start on these bullhorn equipped bikes that you can feel the bars flexing. It is something I always found alarming if there were no spares available. Folks still claim you lose very little energy with straight arms but I find that argument holds no water for me. I have spent thousands of hours on TT bikes and when you transition for traffic, road geometry etc (i.e. sit up on the bullhorns) you can feel the extra effort needed to remain sitting as well as the wind resistance. It surely can't just be me.
I see many bikes now with wide tires at low pressures (60-70 psi) and am equally mystified as to the utility of all that soft rubber hitting into the road. When I have to repair a puncture on the road-side my pump struggles to get beyond 70 psi so upon remounting the 'soft' tire feels like I'm riding into a 30 knot headwind. Obviously a narrow 23mm tire suffers more than a 30+mm tire if soft but I have a dozen or so pre-WW2 bikes, so I'm very familiar with the virtue of soft tires but I can't see the logic if speed is desired. Boardman's 30 yo Hour record Lotus bike (a record just been broken) had 200 psi silk tubs for tires.
Someone once told me much of what is considered ideal is driven by the large component makers making you part with your money. Electronic shifting and disc brakes are now apparently indispensable - it makes you wonder. Two dished offset hubs...ugh!

Meanwhile on the local German market...

None of the wheels do justice to this, but the frame has nice details.

I'm not a fan, generally, but I do take a bow to the bike that threw Rasmussen off a couple times in Stage 20 of the 2006 Tour.

I'll give the 'grocery run' a 'go' and let you know how it turns. Just need to find a set of wheels...

The fork is admittedly homebrew, and yeah, maybe not as nice as the Australian bike above or the real Takhion, but if it does the job, it does the job... I definitely could not break it, not sure about a TT Hulk, but I love the details, and yeah its red. .
So is it a Takhion?

Nice looking wheels to compliment that nice looking frame that Big Mig rode in 1995.
