Addiction LXXVIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, my first-half cycling calendar is officially empty now. The last two events I had signed up for (part of a 4 event series) have been cancelled.

Slow day. Good thing I have other things to do, and the energy (first time since my release) to do them. The brand new water line I put in worked flawlessly until this morning. Then it just stopped. Where does one begin to troubleshoot such? We began with a hacksaw and a handful of couplers. Then it got too hot out for the Mrs., and I only have one hand. So I had to call a retreat, until it cools down some.

My tractor experience is limited to mowing my folks front yard and runway at their house in Texas with a 6ft box blade.

I clearly remember my father's warning when he was teaching me:

"Be extremely careful mowing near the house. This tractor will go through the house like there's nothing there"

Other than that bit of pucker factor, spending 4 hours on a tractor mowing is quite meditative.

I may need to start mowing lawns this week.

When I was young and gluttonous, I never thought that I'd get to the plate sharing stage, but my wife and I have been doing just that, recently (though not at table service restaurants - still too self-conscious for that). And yeah, we've pared down the number of establishments that we're willing to go to.

The worst, though? Those food porn media outlets that think crazy excess is somehow delicious: burgers with multiple patties and oily cheese dripping all over the place, or using breaded chicken cutlets as taco shells. using mac and cheese as a condiment, etc, etc. So gross.

Man, you guys are making me hungry for junk. Which chain was it that came up with multiple patty “burger” that had grilled cheese sandwiches for a bun?

edit: Found it! Friendly’s...

Today I took the mtb up the mountain behind the house. It's mostly paved and gains about 2000 feet in 5 miles, 2500 feet in 7 miles with an extra out and back. There are no cars and a lot of people walk on the lower part, sometimes I see runners at the top which is impressive.
Today I took a dirt only option for the descent which ends on the property of the county hospital. There were about a dozen nurses hiking up the bottom and I asked if it was their lunch break. They said it was a walk break, an extra break beside lunch. As grim as things are at that place it seems like a great idea.
When I got down to the hospital grounds there were nurses walking all over.

Then there was the Hot Band, but IMO her best period was the time she spent with Rodney Crowell. Great songwriter. And performer.

When I worked on a dairy farm as a boy, I always liked mowing but the best was plowing. As you say, meditative.
My family in my home town are still farmers.
