Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

10. I commute 10 miles a day 5 days a week. No kit tho, jeans and a Pendleton with a flat pedal commute bike.

Average 35 miles (when factoring in after work rides)
Shortest 15 miles. Anything less is a waste of time.

Longest ride? 106 miles by distance, 6 hours by time (shorter distance, 101 miles, but it took an hour longer than the 106 miles).

Average? These days, maybe 20 miles. When I had more time, 30-35 was my daily ride sweet spot for not being too exhausted the rest of the day to get anything productive accomplished.

Shortest I'll bother? Outdoors, maybe 16-18 miles. Indoors? I'll ride the trainer for 20 minutes if that's all I have time for. Something is always better than nothing, IMO.

So you don't get into a cycling kit for rides under 50 miles. That's hardcore

1. 162 miles (R.A.I.N.)
2. 59 miles*
3. 20 miles**

*59 mile average ride on 187 rides was my best in 2016. That number has been going down the past few years due injury and medical issues. Presently in the mid-40's for average ride.

**Takes at least 10 miles to warm up and get loose anymore and it's not worth washing the kit for anything less than 20.

1. 325 miles in 24hrs elapsed (3 years ago), could've gone longer but a 24hr ride was the goal, 99% super flat, the first 22 hours were solo, and the last 2 hours were drafting a fresh legged buddy at 19+mph. Aerobars were essential. Hardest event was the D2R2 180km (111 miles, 13,300' of gain, 80% dirt, road bike w/30's), ~12.5 hours.
2. 30 miles
3. 1hr minimum (outdoors on road, gravel, or mtb), 30mins if on an indoor trainer

1 - 150 miles
2 - Not sure - maybe ~30 miles for road? I ride track and MTB too.
3 - 7 miles - if I'm commuting straight in or home from work. Typically one (or both) of the commute legs will be extended but it's a 7 mile direct shot.

  1. What's your longest ride (distance) -- probably the Markleeville Death Ride, which was 129 miles (and 15,000' of elevation!)
  2. What's your average ride (distance) -- no idea (though I do have the data in spreadsheets from which I could fairly easily get an accurate figure) but I'll bet it's somewhere around 40 miles. And going down every year.
  3. What's the least mileage you'll bother getting kitted up and out for? -- I'll put on shorts and shoes to ride around the block just to test a recent repair, that's half a mile...but for a legit "I'm Going On A Bike Ride Now" I guess 10-12 miles.
