The early Moultons are a bit of a conundrum; they made use of some radical ideas that didn't make it into the mainstream at the time, but have become pretty common now. Like full suspension that actually works (better suspension than any MTB I've ever ridden) and small wheels. And the Sturmey Archer four speed hub is a marvel, really one of the best bicycle transmissions there is. Not to mention integral (but removable) luggage racks; the front rack is attached to the frame, rather than the fork, so weight on the front rack doesn't bother the steering... pretty smart bikes, though a bit heavy.

The comparison to Bike Friday is fair, but the Moultons are 45 years old. Still... given a choice between a $45 Moulton and a $45 Bike Friday, I might well go for the Bike Friday (for a commuter).

Didn't some Moultons have a tensioned cable system as part of the frame? Seems like an excellent strength/weight ratio idea, similar to the tensioned-wire-spoked wheel.

Trek 560, 59cm, 1984, A Classic Lugged-Steel Road Bike - $280 (Havertown)

Date: 2010-04-08, 1:11PM EDT
Reply to: sale-frbfb-1682410707@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

1984 Trek 560. 700c wheels. 59cm frame (center-to-center), 33.5 inch standover height. Best for a rider from about 5’9” to just over 6’ tall, depending on your sizing preference. See the complete parts spec below.
Please note that this is an all-out, no-compromises race bike. It was built to carry a fit rider over a distance quickly. It’s really not the best choice for grocery-getting or a leisurely sight-seeing jaunt. It doesn’t feature plastic click-shifters or an upright, beginner-friendly posture. It’s lean, mean, and fast, and is best for someone who either knows how to use it, or is willing to learn how.
It’s also not a show bike. The basic black (original) finish has some dings, and the clear-coat is blotchy in spots. But the Reynolds butted and lugged steel frame is solid, with no dents, cracks, or damage. This is a bike you won’t mind hammering hard and then leaning against a brick wall. People who don’t know bikes might not even give it a second look. But you’d better lock it up, because people who know what they’re looking at will definitely give it some attention. It’s loaded with Suntour Superbe parts, right down to the headset and hollow bottom-bracket spindle. It also features the outstanding Sugino “Super Mighty” crankset, and a nicely-worn suede Selle San Marco Laser (Concor Supercorsa) saddle. And I don’t want to forget to mention the Mavic wheelset.
You could certainly leave this bike as it is, and enjoy the heck out of a classic lugged-steel race bike. But if ever there was a frame crying out for the reasonable expense of a quality powder-coat finish, this is it.
This bike has been fully overhauled, with new chain, cables, housings, tires, and bartape. It is in outstanding mechanical condition. Come on out for a test ride. Havertown is about 20 minutes west of University City, between Upper Darby and Ardmore/Wynnewood. Complete specs:
Frame: Reynolds 501 Chromoly Steel, butted tubes, lugged construction, Made in USA
Wheelset: Mavic MA-40 front, Mavic G-40 rear, Campagnolo Record hub, 13 thru 25 tooth, 6 speed freewheel
Crankset: Sugino Super Mighty, with Mighty Competition rings 54/47
Derailleurs/Shifters: Suntour Superbe, 12 speed friction
Brakes: Suntour Superbe
Saddle: Selle San Marco Laser, Concor Supercorsa, made in Italy
Handlebar: Belleri France
Pedals: Shimano Dura Ace PD-7401 (Look Patent, Product of France)
Tires: Bontrager 700c x 25

Bridgestone Sirius 57cm- vintage lugged steel - $250 (Denton)

Bridgestone Sirius, 57cm. Beautiful lugged steel frame in excellent condition, very few cosmetic blemishes. Suntour MarkII groupo, Suntour's second best offering in the early 80's. Shimano 600 hubs laced to Campy Hardox rims, roll smooth and true. Specialized Nimbus tires with only 300 miles of use. Brooks Swift saddle in excellent condition, if you don't know of Brooks visit https://www.brooksengland.com/ Everything on this bike is in great condition and ready to ride for thousands of miles. This is a very capable bike, the frame's geometry is aggressive and very appropriate for racing yet the steel offers a comfortable and compliant ride. Full size pics can be viewed at https://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...3/bridgestone/

Lotus Odyssey bike w/ Columbus frame early 80's vintage

Auction here.
Someone should give this a second look--it says local pickup, but in the description, the seller says he'll ship it.

If the price stays the same for the last five hours of the auction, it's about to be a major deal for someone. Vintage loaded touring bike (with fenders and racks?!) for under $200? Wow.

If they are not already gone -- someone in Columbus Ohio should snag this - Lotus Mixte, low end Schwinn mountain bike (my guess is a Hurricane or a Mirada) and two junkers -- asking $100.

I keep looking at this. it seems real nice but I just have no room! plus I don't think it has those 'trek' dropouts with like the little caps that go over the ends of the stays. if i bought a trek it would have to have those
