Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That reminds me, I was meaning to try building a sub-15 lb Cannondale Six13.

Legalize My Cannondale. And, I expect it cost a heck of a lot less than six grand.

Not a defense of Viathon or anything related, but a 9120 group is about 2 grand on it's own, and another 2 grand for the Knight 35s.

Any of us could build sub-16lb for less than 6 grand, but likely not with those components.

I won't buy from Walmart for so many reasons. Not the least of which is the destruction of LBS and cycling dedicated on-line vendors. But, if I did, I'd want to know a lot about who made the frames, the quality of the CF and much more.

I disagree. Bought a 60" about 10 years ago and it has been absolutely outstanding. Beautiful picture, and haven't had the first thing go wrong with it.

I'd highly recommend.

Yes, and a few folks have had amazing relationships with their Walmart sourced Huffys. It can happen.

This is no different than the Walton brothers buying Giant or Cannondale and selling the same bikes through Walmart stores and web pages. Until people understand that ... they will behave like most people on the internet.

The intelligent ones understand that once a product is brought in house, the corporation for sure has final say on the spec.

Ok, so accepting what you just posted, how does that apply to the current line of Viathon bikes? And is that application a negative one or positive?
The bikes sure seem well spec'd and are priced competitively. Knowing this, what is your point when it comes to this brand's current line of bikes?

Considering how Walmart operates, if you think they can shave a penny off their cost of something, what would they do? Again, the bikes are probably fine. There is likely an understood minimum quality the target market would put up with.

The initial point was the humor of the situation. I apologize to all of the Walmart supporters I have clearly offended. Whatever. Maybe it's the personality of the Road forum. Regardless, message received- I'll banish myself back to the C&V forum.

I tend to agree with you.

Walmart is just a POS retailer. They don't provide any value to the consumer. They simply offer low prices by abusing their suppliers.

Their MO is simple. Ask for rock bottom prices from their suppliers, then pay 180+ days after receiving the product, even if they agreed to Net 30, 60, or even 90 days. Basically using them as a bank for interest-free loans. Sometimes they don't pay at all.

Now, as for the bikes, their frame manufacturers are in Taiwan, just like everyone else. They buy parts from SRAM, just like everyone else. So frankly I couldn't care less about how they treat their vendors when it comes to bikes. And I'm sure the bikes are decent quality.

Nevertheless, they're still a POS company and I wouldn't be caught dead riding one of their bikes. Billionaires who have "pet projects" for the sake of vanity can kiss my hairy ass.

The closest CF frame designers/manufacturers have gotten to a "standard" is a 42mm hole in the frame. I sincerely hope T47 catches on.

Viathon has to use an "adapter" bottom bracket, because Shimano seemingly refuses to make a spindle size other than 24mm.

Going with a standard that has a larger bore will lend BB/crankset flexibility. A lot, possibly even a majority, of the current builds with Shimano cranksets are adapted down from a larger BB standard (Trek's BB90 frames are one of the few that can't take a spindle larger than 24mm, and they look to be moving away from that).
