[ I just wear a Hat with ear Flaps to keep my ears warm when the road is (rarely)icy. ]

I use a Giro ski helmet with vents. But only when it's in the 30s or colder. It can get a bit warm, but the vents really help.

Above freezing I wear a buff to keep my ears from freezing and falling off. From freezing to about -10C I wear a fleece-backed lycra balaclava (sugoi) under my helmet. Colder than that and I usually wear the same balaclava under a wool toque with ear flaps, no helmet.

I keep my ears covered and don't over do it. Add a Buff with thin wool cap and I'm good down to the single digits.

I have a Giro winter helmet and it's way too warm even with the vents open unless it's stupid cold out. In the 20s I melt in it and in the teens I fog goggles wearing it.

Below 40F, I switch to a hooded windbreaker and wear the hood under the helmet. I've inherited a decent crop of hair for insulation that works down to maybe 10-15F in conjunction with the wind break. Below that, I add a rather thin wool beanie and that's good down to maybe -5 to -10F. Below that, I seem to have lost interest over the years.

I keep my summer helmet all year long even during windy days below -30F. I feel that the top of the head need to breath whatever the temps. It also help adjusting whatever overdressing there is somewhere else (that can also be because of weather temperatures variations, effort variations, etc...)
Also adjusting with layers is easier than adjusting with helmets.

Put me down for a thin fleece balaclava. I got it from ebay, which has a good selection, cheaper than your big box stores at home. And most have free shipping. I double up when it gets below zero f. I use v muffs for added warmth on the ears. A helmet cover and the v muffs turns my helmet into a good winter riding helmet.

Bump on an old thread, I was looking to post a review for the 45NRTH Greazy.

I've been lusting for a Greazy for a couple winters and finally got one this year. My review, it's great for mild temps (10-35F): however, for colder temps it has a flaw. Yesterday I was on a short rider (5 miles) in temps just above 0F and the brim was catching a strong wind causing added wind chill effect on my forehead... it started feeling like brain-freeze from icecream.

So for the coldest days, I'll go with a standard wool skull cap (no brim). I have an old Smartwool beanie that I love!

I will pair that with a 45NRTH Toaster Fork and wool buff when temps get below 0F.
