Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fork; Lack of filler

Hi,

I bought fork and found that under "crown" there is a gap between two elements. Some kind of filler is visible only on 1/3 of hole. I have the same second fork ( damaged), and there is no gap.

Is this problem? Is it safe to use?

Might be a weak spot... Only expensive testing would tell

What’s the filler in the second fork made of? If it’s metal, it might be structural. If it’s something softer, then it’s likely just the fill the gap. In that case, if it makes you feel better, buy some silicon caulk and squirt some in there

@Litespud it is some kind of hard compound.

I asked LBS ( Road bikes experts) and they said that it is Brake Insert glued inside and I should not worry about too much.

I inspected fork from inside through the hole. It seems that glue is lets say "esthetic" element. Brake insert is one big element which goes through whole upper part of fork and above crown joins steerer tube.
