Are Shimano UG cassettes worth "preserving"?

I just picked up a time capsule 84 Schwinn Tempo that came with a almost "new" wheelset. Its got 27" rims and Shimano 600 tri color hubs with a 7 speed UG 13-26 cassette. My first impulse is to swap freehub body's and run a HG cassette and "save" the UG cassette.

This bike has is already getting paint touch ups and will probably end up with an entirely different wheelset, chainrings, pedals, ect.ect, so I'm defiantly breaking up the band as far as originality. I could also "preserve" the entire wheelset, but i don't know what bike I'd be saving it for.

As an aside I also have a partial Shimano cog board/box some where in the garage and a variety of UG cassettes on various "preserved" bikes in my hoardings, so its not clear who I'd be preserving anything for, except the "greater good", as I'm not going to run out of any thing in my lifetime....

It sounds like you already know that HG shifts more smoothly, and that's what you're going to run on this bike. I'd do the same. You can tell whether the original is worth preserving by looking on eBay. Are used ones in demand?

Well I paid a pretty penny for the two NOS Dura Ace ones I bought to make a custom cassette for the Krapf bike. But I don't think the regular UG cassettes are that much in demand. The Dura Ace one has the special smaller cog on the end.

Some of the Tri-Color hubs are UG and HG compatible. The freehub body is threaded on the outside and the inside. You might be able to swap the cassette without changing the Freehub body.

With 7 cogs, it has the narrower spacing to begin with, I would remove, clean and zip tie it together.

you having a cog board reduces the urgency to use it, but others might.

I would definitely preserve it! There are a few folks out there who still prefer UG shifting over HG, and Shimano isn't making UG anymore.

Funny you should ask. I too have an UG that came on a 84 Ross Signature Triad but in 6 speed. I also got a partial box of NOS cogs. The Mavic G40 rims are in excellent condition too. I can build up a 14-30, and I have some NOS Super Champion 58 rims looking for a build, and that nice early Shimano is calling out.
In your case with the 7 speed, I would gladly use it.

Definitely save it so you can sell it on Ebay.
For your own use though, if you are not a stickler for originality, then obviously HG is better than UG in every way. For starters you can still buy HG 7 speed cassettes brand new

If you had a 32 on that board I would take it

I have 2 bikes with UG... sr1 semi pro and 84 team miyata (have another non ug wheelset) and would not convert them I am sure there would be some interest in the saved rings in the used market, whether it is worth the hassle to you I don't know

I do have a couple NOS 6 speed UG cassette hubs that do not have swappable free hub bodies, I think that they are or can be spaced at 120mm, which gets into the "No contemporary substitution" zone..... I think I'm narrowing in on a proper rationalization.
