TA vs. Stronglight

If you want good service and long life, go with Stronglight Super Competition cups. They're better made with smoother races.

Old style Stronglight BSC cups:

Stronglight Super Competition BSC cups:

A lot of cheap Stronglight BB spindles show up on eBay. They're roll formed and case hardened. They came with Stronglight cast aluminum TS, 100, 104 and other economy model crank sets. Look at the spindle tapers...

The GOOD spindles have machined surfaces on the tapers.

Machined flats on and old spindle:

Later spindle with machined flats:

TA cups are another alternative. We used to use them to replace Stronglight cups because they were better quality plus less money and more readily available for us.

Standard TA 344 spindles for doubles measure 114.5mm. The older ones were 116.5mm.

TA 373 spindles for triples are ~118mm.

Hope this helps a little...

If cups are holding you back, but you can find a 118mm spindle, I've got a perfect set of english threaded cups, but they come with a "144" spindle, which measures 112mm on my calipers. I would sell the set to you for $40 shipped. Can post pictures if you're interested.
