Back when the smoke here was really bad, I watched a video a rider shot on the road I posted while on the trainer. It worked! I even used the gears to simulate the rolling nature of the road.

I've got a really broad range of "typical" roads. A fair portion of my miles are within the metro, so a lot of city streets, from lakes and parkways to skyscrapers. Once I'm out of the cities, it's generally 45-55mph roads with generous shoulders. The problem is those damn suburban areas in between, with their 45mph roads that don't have shoulders and the indignant soccer moms that think they're doing you a favor by not running you over as they pull out of the Panera parking lot.

I'm one of those guys that's just looking for the work when I'm on the trainer - the ride simulation thing just doesn't do it for me. Give me a power target and a duration so that I can get my work done in 45 - 75min and then get on with my day.

One of my favorite roads was in the path of one of the biggest fires in LA County history. It's still burning up there so I haven't seen what it looks like now. I was bigger when this pic was taken.

Speaking of roads, if the roads are as bad where trsntr lives as they are in Champaign I don’t know how he rides anywhere. A full suspension mountain bike wouldn’t survive.

My county has excellent roads for the most part. Many roads are bituminous asphalt and even the chip seal is a fine surface. Sure, we are pretty wide open in spots which makes for a lot of wind but still not as bad as as the Champaign Urbana area which really is pancake flat and hardly a tree in sight. I don't know what their chip seal is like because it's been quite awhile since I've ridden in that area but the worst that I've found is in the Springfield area. They don't seem to want to use a fine surface chip, no idea why.

Potholes are extremely rare around me unless you’re riding in the cities of Pekin, East Peoria, or Peoria. Stay out of the metro area and you have to work to see a pothole.
