Roam vs 1030

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Roam vs 1030

So I had a 520 and the battery went bad. I switched to a Bolt and was super happy with that. Easy to setup and just worked. My eyes have been getting not so great with age and was finding it hard to see the bolt. I splurged and got a 1030 for the screen size. I ended up getting a halo around the entire screen on the 1030. Its now out of warranty and Garmin wants $140 to send me a refurb. That kind of put me off. The only other complaint I have with the 1030 is the screen glare. The Wahoo was way better for that. I find it very hard to see the screen on the 1030 at certain angles in the day. So now I am trying to decide if I want to go with the Roam out of spite. Or just cough up the $140 and get on with it. I do miss the Wahoo screen Not sure on the screen size with the Roam. I do not have a need for maps in all my years of riding so that isnt a factor either.. Opinions from anyone who has used both the Roam and 1030 would be helpful

How far out of warranty?

It might be worth it to try Garmin again.

I tried Garmin direct today.. They didnt say how long. They just asked for the serial number. I am pretty sure I am going to just get the refurb unit... I would like the Roam but just doesnt make sense. Maybe the next version of the Roam will be out in the summer

My 1030 had the halo. I turned it in for a refurb with Garmin the 12 month I had it. But there are some on the Garmin site in the 1030 thread that have gone past a year.

When I got my 1030 the Roam was not out. I still would had gotten the 1030 because I wanted to be able to use BaseCamp. I had too much already from using the Montana on my bicycles.

I know that my following recommendation is not what you asked for. I also have declining eye sight and had to switch over to bifocals. I found the large screen of the Lezyne Mega XL to be helpful in that regard, especially when I turned the background black and the text to white. Even on the brightest day, I could clearly see all the information with one downward glance. Do not know your exact use cases and investment into equipment already purchased, but if you are looking for other alternates, this is one I would recommend.

I just got the 1030 early this year and now wouldn't trade it for anything. Best computer I have ever used. I did a ton of playing with the Wahoo's, Lenzen, and Karoo and the Garmin for me was still the best. I had a 520 with a battery that wasn't so good anymore.

for old eyes and all the training factors 1030 is my choice. Just my opinion though...

FYI, switching out a dead battery on an old garmin is really easy.
There are tons of youtube videos with step by step instructions.

How much info do you need on the screen? You could reduce the number of fields on the Bolt to gain larger text/numbers.

$140 for a refurb 1030 or $380 for a Roam ?. 1030 all the way. It'll likely never have an issue again.

If buying new and for your limited needs of larger text, I'd say get a Roam.

FWIW, I've never had screen glare issues on my 1000 or 1030, while I could not see the turn-by-turn directions on my Bolt, which are white text on black background. It was unreadable while wearing sunglasses. TBT generally is much better on a 1030.

If you end up not happy with the 1030 you could e-bay it for what you paid Garmin.

Does anyone know if Garmin will take my Garmin Edge 1000 as kind of a trade-in and allow me to buy a new 1030 at a discount or a refurbed 1030 for short money?

The 130 can be bought new for around $150 on sale, since the 130 plus is now the newest model.

Buy the refurbished unit, sell the unit, use the money to purchase the Wahoo.

If you keep it it is still a Garmin with all the Garmin software glitches. One day it works the next day you lose a function because of an "upgrade". After two Garmins (820 and 830), my next one will be anything but. How a company like that stays in business is beyond me. Maybe I just answered my own question because idiots like me purchase a second unit hoping the first one was a fluke.

I was asking about the Edge 1030, not the 130 but thanks for offering input.

The only way to know is to call and ask. You'll probably have to pay at least the $140.

Also the 1030 is starting to go on sale: https://www.westernbikeworks.com/pro...rmin-edge-1030

You'll get on with the new screen. After 8 months mine is still good. When you get the refurb you'll still have to do the updates for the firmware and maps. There is a guide on the files to backup and transfer to the new units. Not that big a deal if your rides are on Garmin Connect.

If you have not already found the forum, this is not the greatest but there are a few users who will help.
