Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In my bargain hunting, I've come across closeout Di2 hydro lever sets for 150 bucks or so. That gave me the incentive to price out everything, and it still came out close to $1k when it was all said and done.

Meanwhile, mechanical has gotten quite reasonable, which makes the Di2 an even tougher sell.

After 3 days in a row of nuisance snow, the main roads are rideable. Hoping to get out later for some real miles.

Ahh. Buy the levers, set them aside, and as the deals pop up, grab the wanted bits. Once you're halfway equipped, that's license to get the rest. "Halfway" is quite subjective, as is waiting time.

I keep entertaining the idea of upgrading the Crockett to 11 speed, but I found those Shimano v-brakes almost accidentally and they are specifically designed for the 5700/6700 brake pull. I worry I might spend a chunk if money and end up with brakes that don't work as well.

Truthfully, I've given some thought to buying the newer Crockett disc frame and building up from scratch.

I had to cancel at the start. There was still some ice on the roads. Sad! But safe.

Agree. Most likely will get a new Ultegra or 105 groupset in 1-2 years. Staying with rim brakes until/unless I get a whole new bike which won’t happen for 5+ years.

Ha. I was just thinking about building up a wheel set with this method. With electronic shifting, compatibility and obsolescence is a bit more concerning.

If I was service manager it would vary depending on shifter type.

Since I'm a retro-grouch, I still run rim brakes and 10 speed Di2. Most of my wheels are now 11 speed compatible, so when and if a derailleur dies, it's just a matter of replacing those. The levers are switches, and those don't know the difference between an 11 speed and a 10 speed shifter.

What's there to look for? The cable corrosion is out in the middle where it's most exposed to the elements.

2: triggers without hatch, rear exit brifters, gripshifts without hatch,

3sp triggers would be split between the two I reckon, some are easier than others...
