How bad is Hwy 92 between Halfmoon Bay and Canada Rd?

If I ride from Half Moon Bay to Canada Rd via Hwy 92 in a weekend mid-day, how bad is it? I checked google street view, it seems doable. But I would like to confirm people who have the local knowledge:-)

Thanks!

I've never ridden this stretch and would avoid doing so. I've ridden Westbound - Canada to Half Moon Bay - several times and there are many tight places on the road into Half Moon Bay with little to no shoulder. Eastbound is better now that they added passing lanes on the climb, but the first 3 miles from Main Street are very tight. Also, traffic is typically heavy on a weekend and the Pumpkin Festival coming up (Oct 15 and 16) adding to traffic.

A longer, but more pleasant route, would be Highway 1 south to Verde, Lobitos Creek, Tunitas Creek to Skyline. Then either down Kings or Skyline to 92 depending which end of Canada you want to get to. The Eastbound descent on 92 from Skyline to Canada is doable if you keep your speed up and take the lane.

Very narrow, no shoulder in places, very steep in sections and heavily traveled by cars and big trucks. I would avoid it like the plague, especially when there are so many more miles of great riding that is the opposite of that stretch of road.

YMMV

It's something I would avoid for the reasons stated already. I do see riders once in a while, but always worry about their safety. It's not just the narrow roads, it's the tons of wide trucks that are on those narrow roads. Tunitas Creek, on the other hand, is an incredibly beautiful and serene ride. It's my favorite...

Thanks everyone for the advice. Yeah, the road near HMB is narrow and not much shoulder as I checked the google streetview again. It's a pity that there is a wide shoulder on the climb (west bound) but not on the flatter part near HMB. Shouldn't the county considering widening the road and add bike lanes there? It will connect Canada Rd, Hwy1 and Skyline, which are so well travelled bike routes.

92 is a state highway, thus no funds for improvements. Especially for something like cycling. The improvement to the eastbound 92 climb was approved/constructed during an economic boom. I think the next proposed improvement is adding a passing lane (and perhaps wider shoulders) on the westbound 92 climb from Canada to Skyline.

Yea it seems rough. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is rough. I was driving to Half Moon Bay and noticed Highway 92 had almost no shoulder room. Very little and extremely steep. I don't know why the book recommends highway 92.

HMB to Canada Road (alternate route)

Does anyone know if Cyrpress Ridge Road is open to cyclists? It connects Higgens Canyon to Skyline, which may be an alternate east-bound route from Half Moon Bay to Woodside.

No, Cypress Ridge is not a real road. But to add to what others have said, 92 between Skyline and Canada is much more doable than 92 between HMB and Skyline.

I used to do 92 west from Skyline to HMB on occasion. However, it was usually on a Sunday well before 8am--which meant a very early start to ride up King's. Usually the traffic wasn't a factor on the downhill portion (which really isn't all that steep) and was at worse moderately annoying on the flatter parts. I did this in order to do a full run between HMB and Santa Cruz. (I was never a big fan of defending Tunitas which I felt was sort of dangerous.) I would never have considered riding up 92 as it would have meant a long time on a unpleasant road for no real purpose.

The ride eastbound between Skyline and Canada is okay but a bit nerve-racking as it feels like there's no room for error. Most of the time too much traffic to be enjoyable.
