hello, I just received my dad’s 1983 Colnago Super. I would like to change the wheel set from tubular tires two clinchers, but I have no idea…. The bike currently has Campagnolo Record Hubs with Ambrosio Synthesis Super Professional Rims.

Could anyone help me with this? What should I be thinking about?

I will be riding the bike often for long distance rides.

Nice bike, and great to see it handed down to be ridden.
Do you want to replace the wheel-set you have or re-build it w/ either "period" or "modern" clincher rims/tires?

PS: When was the last time all of the bearing surfaces were overhauled w/ fresh grease, cables lubed and brake pads inspected?
A machine of that age usually had a serious annual service to keep it in top nick for long hard miles, ask Dad if you can.

What I'd do is have a local bike shop swap out the tubular rims to clinchers.

Count how many spokes each wheels have and search for a same count rimset.

As a matter of fact. I would love it if I had my fathers Univega Supra Sport. If your spoke count is 32 hole, I'd be glad to gift you some dark Wolber rims. (Itll just cost you shipping).

Ok so I spoke a little too soon. The Wolbers are 32 and some used clincher Mavic G40 are 36.

We're on opposites sides of the continent. I'm afraid shipping will cost almost as much as buying locally for cheap.

Im getting $45 for USPS shipping.

As a matter of fact yes you can. When lacing wheels you'd skip 2 on each rim on each side. My LBS has done it before.

Keep,the wheel set you have now and get a new wheel set. Only 2 posts so you are not looney yet. Your "new" set should be 32 hole set of Campy Record hubs with skewers and put some Mavic Open Pros on them with DT comp spokes and brass nipples.

EDIT: Any houshold with a Colnago Super aught to have at least two wheel sets for it. And at least one of them tubular.

Sounds like a nice bike, so I'd hunt for some period correct "nos" 36h rims from Mavic.

If I couldn't find any, I'd probably go with new Sun m13ii rims. Then rebuild the wheels with the Record hubs, Sapim Race spokes from danscomp.com, and the free nipples Dans bundles with 'em.

You can flip the frameset upside down and true 'em up right there. Sheldon Brown has an easy to follow wheel building page. It's not complicated.

I'm in Toronto as well. Any reason you dont want to try tubulars? What size is the colnago? The record hubs are great. You have 3 options.

1- use the wheels as is
2- rebuild the hubs with a set of clincher rims. You will likely need new spokes.
3- get a new set of clincher wheels.

Anecdotal, but I’ve been riding an ‘83 Super Profil rebuilt in ‘15 with tubulars and no issues since. Same tires. Granted, it sees lighter use in the rotation, but really rides smooth and doesn’t let down on mixed surface. Plenty of varied miles. Try quality tubulars and carry a cheap spare w/ pump. That’s the inexpensive option, and high quality. Go from there.
