Best components for the money?

Crankset, saddle, seat post, handlebars, etc. looking into State bicycle co and especially Projekt Fixie. Any experience with either? Good or bad? What say you?

Anything inexpensive? I'm not wanting to drop $150 on a crankset. I'm looking for about $40-$60 range for a crankset, $15-30 on a saddle, $20-30 on pedals, you get the idea.

Thanks mate

How about instead of buying two hundred dollars worth of junk, you instead just get a kilo tt pro?

Yeah, that you're not looking for good components.

You're being just like the guy who recently came into my shop wanting to buy a decent fixed gear bike - his words were "Nothing 'pro-level' but not total crap either" - and proceed to say his budget was one hundred and fifty dollars.

All your budgets are very very bottom of the barrel. Why do you want to spend more on lower parts on a bad frame, rather than getting a complete bike that will be better over all?

:/

Thanks for all of the support and help guys. I really appreciate it. I enjoy building bikes, and this is my first fixie. I have a budget and I just want stuff that will last without spending a ton of money. I don't want to buy a complete. I don't want to buy carbon fiber, track ready components.

I. Just. Want. To. Build. A. Fixie. Thanks.

We definitely aren't talking carbon fiber.
Why don't you just take the kilo tt pro apart?

First off, what's your budget?

I'm looking for about $40-$60 range for a crankset, $15-30 on a saddle, $20-30 on pedals, you get the idea. Sun rims with formula hubs on velomine for $125. A chain, tires, and tape. That's my bike.

probably $260 total

For what it's worth, you can just buy a complete bike online and assemble it if learning how a bike is put together is what is important to you, but I suspect you want a "Custom Fixie" with colorful components or something similarly ridiculous. You asked for the best components for the money and buying complete will get you those, especially with a tiny budget.

Some things you're not thinking about (that usually aren't free):
  1. headset
  2. bottom bracket
  3. handlebars
  4. stem
  5. seatpost
  6. seatpost clamp
  7. headset spacers
  8. tubes
  9. rim tape
  10. clips/straps
  11. cog
  12. lockring

Im not looking for crazy colorful components. I'm looking for a clean look. That's it. I want something that works. I want something functional and not junky. I don't care if the parts are used or not.

If you knew what it takes to "build" a bike, you wouldn't need us to tell you about pedals or saddles. Hang out, look around, there's no one answer to questions like this.

I honestly don't care about saddles and pedals. I just threw it in there as something that I need. I'm looking for a crankset and that's it. I have a frame, fork, stem, bottom bracket, and handlebars. I just need rims, a crankset, bar and rim tape, tubes, tires, a saddle, and pedals. I jut need advice on a crankset. I know what it takes to build a bike.

Sorry for this. I'm just frustrated that people can't understand that I don't want a complete. I understand that that is my best route, but I don't have the money.

Get any old road crank and either five axle spacers (same as chainring spacers, really) or specific [shorter] singlespeed chainring bolts so you can run one ring.

And FFS, stop using the term "fixie".

Asking what are the "best components for the money?" and what cranks can I get for 40-60 are very very different questions. The second completely ignores the first. A cost vs quality assessment leads most people to either Andel or Omniums. $40-$60 cranks leads most people to either sadness or changing cranks in less than a year.

Now that you've brought up Andel: https://www.benscycle.net/index.php?m...oducts_id=6865
For just $5 over the OPs budget, but I don't know what difference there is betweeen this "economy" version and the standard Andel save aesthetics. I have the regular set of Andels, which would show up around $40-60 used and work very well, but you don't see them very often on the bay.

So you already have a frame you want to use? Is that the deal? High quality used is the way to make things work with your budget. Maybe find a donor bike (doesn't matter the size or condition of the frame) that has parts you want on craigslist in your price range. Hell, you might be able to find a couple donor bikes to salvage parts from for your $300.
