Hard skin as a result of cycling

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My guess is that it's his shorts. Good cycling shorts have to be, well, cycling shorts, with a pad and tight. They're tight enough if you can just get them over your butt. If you can't, they're too small, that's how you know. Then you reach down there, grab a good hold, and pull all that stuff up and it just stays there, can't possible touch the saddle.
