Well, well, well...
I've finally found a place where I'll be doing a lot of riding - it's a MUP that follows the Truckee River for miles and miles and miles. And, I may have found a bike that really feels "just right" on me - took a brief test ride today.
Here's the bike trail, and here's a stock photo of the bike - a 2016 Sirrus Elite.
Oops... the bike trail pics didn't upload.

Your bike is yellow? Two of mine are. Not as fast as red.

Just for giggles, go ride a Cannondale Quick. You will be amazed at how different the ride is from the Quick to the Sirrus. Bikes are cool.

Last time I rode that mup was ~15 years ago and heading east it started at Harrah's Auto Museum downtown and went as far as the east end of Sparks. Heading the other way there were several other stretches from Idlewild to where Mayberry cross the river at the west end of Reno. Have they added on or connected some of those isolated stretches?

My yellow bikes have beat lots of red ones. There's something to be said for not waving a flag in front of the bikes you've passed, though. Yellow and red both make highly visible targets whereas black just disappears off the front.
edit: Deeg keeps looking for a bike that feels better, but all the bikes he keeps trying are the same shape. What do they call doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results?

River trails are great. We have the Fox River Trail System, close to my house. The really nice thing, is that you can ride it every day, and it's always changing.

It would appear that the basic hybrid flat bar bike is what's best for me right now. I suppose it's almost a superficial difference between a Trek, a Sirrus, and many other hybrids, but don't we always preach that one should get the bike that feels best? My Globe is a nice bike - but it feels heavy and non-responsive. Kind of like an old Valiant station wagon. Okay, not that bad, but it feels almost like a chore to ride it. These flat bar hybrids are feeling responsive and fun. It's a matter of fine-tuning what I like and how they feel. If that's crazy, well, being crazy is nothing new for me!

Yeah, I have a buddy who found that his flat bar bike caused his wrists to hurt on long rides, and now he's added bar-ends.
This is one reason i really like drop bars, even on my steel touring bike in which I seldom go down in the drops - the possibility of multiple hand positions prevents my hands/wrists/arms from getting tired.

I should have thought it is obvious, DG.
As "everybody knows", riding a bicycle with flat bars for any -- I repeat, any -- distance over ten miles will inevitably result in severe short and long term injury and disability, including but not limited to severe discomfort in your wrists etc. Continued attempts to do rides in excess of 10 miles not using drop bars will result in your arms falling off.
You have been warned.

I strongly endorse bar ends for flat handlebars. I probably use my mountain bike's extensions 80% of the time, because they provide a neutral "handshake" forearm orientation and let me at least approximate the feel of the drops on my road bikes. I have those slick old school 4-finger Shimano brake handles which can be worked surprisingly effectively from the extensions, using one's 4th and 5th fingers.
