Fillet-brazed Sports Tourer - before and after

I posted a while back about getting a '73ish Schwinn Sports Tourer in Opaque Blue from a variety store in LA. Finally finished the re-build.

@pastorbobnlnh You can see I didn't end up using the Hi-E hubs or the Sachs freewheel you sent me. 8 speed was too much for this frame, so I got some Record hub/Wolber rim used wheels and put a 5 speed Suntour freewheel on. I already have another project in mind for that freewheel you sent me.

I see now I need to add a couple links to the chain.

For those wondering, those are Stronglight TS BIS chainrings made for a Stronglight Touring Sport crank. They are 116bcd like the TA Pro crankset and I found a few that allowed me to lower the gearing a bit. Those are 50/40 right now. Just needed to drill out the smaller chainring's mounting holes to accept the TA chainring bolts.

The tires are 38mm Soma Supple Vitesse (Panaracer). On the skinny Wolber rims they only go out to about 34mm. Which is good, because I wouldn't feel comfortable going over 35mm in the rear on this frame in 700c.

Rest of the build:
-Brooks Pro ti rail
-JPR seatpost 26.8
-Stock Schwinn (GB) stem
-Compass randonneur bars
-Suntour Superbe levers
-Schwinn Approved (Suntour) barcons
-Tange MX-125 old school bmx headset
-Cyclone front derailleur
-Schwinn GT-300 Le Tour (Shimano Crane) rear derailleur
-TA Professional 3 pin crankset
-Dura Ace centerpull front brake, Dia Compe 750 rear
-Crank Bros Stamp platform pedals
-Gran Compe centerpull front rack
-Swift Industries Ozette bag
-VO cotton bar tape

Have some Honjos. Going to ride it for a bit and see if it needs any changes before committing to the fender install.

Excellent build. Had one of those for a minute and gifted it to a friend. It was hard let go.

That's a cool lookin' bike!

I love the look of fillet brazed frames- especially the bottom brackets.

I always think back and wonder why I didn't buy Pastor Bob's Coppertone Super Sport... but then if I would have, Top wouldn't be enjoying it.

You know- that whole "... works in mysterious ways" thing...

Yeah 13-22 Suntour. It's the only 5 speed I had on hand. Will be replacing with a larger one soon as the Le Tour RD can handle a 34t max.

You need a longer chain. What is going on back there?

Check out post 2 where I said I need to add a couple links to the chain. Looking at the bike now the RD isn't as stretched. Not sure why it was pulled that far in the pic.

Been riding the bike around for a couple weeks now. The weather is getting slightly better so took it out for a ride today. I swapped the saddle for a Berthoud that I took off a bike of mine that I sold recently. The bike is very stable and comfortable. I was a bit worried about the long top tube but it fits perfectly with these Rene Herse bars. Next is fenders and a bigger freewheel.

Very nice looking build, very functional and well thought out. With a larger bottom cog, and somewhat wider spread of ratios, it should be a fun all day bike. I imagine those wider tires have a smooth, cushioned ride. Bonus points for that handle bar bag, probably the largest volume I have ever seen.

Yes, nice job bringing that one back from the brink. +1 on the bar bag... looks like you could haul a six-pack with ice in it!

No, unfortunately, I never found a frame to even begin the project. But it still could happen! Nice to hear from you again J, I'll drop you a PM shortly.
