Shifter cassette compatibility

Hello all, I am building/rebuilding approximately 20 year old Gary Fisher full suspension bike. Question is: If original shifter is 8 speed Deore (LX?), Can I upgrade to XTR shifters and still be compatible with current rear cassette? Cassette is year 2000, and shifters are unknown year.

As long as the XTR shifters are older 8 speed units also should be no problem, but since you are upgrading these items anyway, you could jump to 10 or 11 speed as well, by purchasing an 11 speed cassette, chain , derailleuer and shifter.

Keeping the components at the Deore level would keep the price nice

No problem going with XTR m900’s or the 8 speed version of the m950... well other than cost. I’m thinking $80-100+ for good used set.

I have one bike with m950 8 speed and a big old Suntour thumb shifter for the double. My left thumb can’t take triggers over the long haul.
