Vintage Cyclo-cross bikes?
Anyone here have any old battle hardened survivors? 20 years old at least, to call vintage.
I realize that they were sort of throwaway bikes, meant to be used and abused for a season or two then relegated to back-up bike, so you don't seem to see too many really old cross bikes.
Wouldn't you love to find an old vintage cyclocrosser from the 30's?

Yeah, kinda what I figured. Seems like cyclocross was in the dark ages until about 10 years ago.
I wish I could find some decent pics of old 'crossers.

The vintage 'crossers, I sure, still exist, but never had the general sentimental value in the cycling community that vintage road bikes had. Granted, there were some lovely 'cross bikes in the 80s, my favorite being the Alan and Geurciotti 'cross bikes. I still have magazine cutouts of Paul Curley's machines from back in the late eighties, when his bike had amongst its unique componenty a plastic BMX saddle. Another cool bike was the custom Marins the Don Myrah rode with neon touches (late eighties, early nineties).
It's a worthy pursuit to dredge up the old 'crossers from the vaults of obscurity, but if you commit to digging deep, I'm sure you'll unearth some real beauties, and I for one would love to see some old barcons, canti's, and plastic BMX saddles.

Note the barend shifters, this shot must be from the early or mid '90s as by the late '90s most riders had gone to STI.
Also interesting is the use of "natural features" as a barrier. Nowdays you get maybe 2 sets of 18" barriers per lap and maybe a run-up.
Yeah I have seen all those old grainy magazine scans from the '20s and '30s (very interesting stuff) but not a single contemporary photo of a really old bike. It just seems odd to me that you can find more pics of MTBs from the '70s than vintage cyclocross bikes. I have been scouring the web for cool vintage bike stuff for years and have as yet to see a good picture of a 'cross bike more than 10 or 15 years old and even those are like hen's teeth.

Go find a copy of the DVD "Pure Sweet Hell". Has actual video footage of 70's 'cross action! Crazy! So much hair-- how did they manage to get their helmets on?

I don't have any pictures of it handy, but I ride a Bianchi Axis that might be 20 years old now. I bought it used and don't know when it was made, but it is lugged steel with 126mm rear dropout spacing.
Then again, the fork is that unicrown steel design they were using in the early 90's, so I'm not sure.

Like those "dirt drops", eh? Well, then go check out the "Midge" handle bar by On-One. go to www.on-one.co.uk if this danged link doesn't work and look for the Midge handlebar.
It's similar to the one in the photo, but probably cooler and better.
I run them on my CX bike and LOVE THEM.
And no, i DON'T work for the company-- although i wish i did since the handlebars just that good.
Actually-- i keep forgetting. Pricepoint stocks the bars.
