for reals:
ride around in circles, decreasing size and speed as you go - and do NOT do this quickly. It will talke time. Learn to ride slowly with your bars turned. We you feel comfortable (make sure feet are NOT in clips/straps or cilpped in) slow to a stop, lead foot forward with wheel pointed towards lead foot.
that is how I learned at the velo

Yea, right now I'm practicing in my living room watching TV, and I'm guessing that is not the best way to learn, from a standstill.

Seriously though, just practice a lot and you'll get it. You had to figure out how to ride a bike at some point, so i'm sure you'll get it.

As trite as it sounds, practice practice practice. I had a two hour or so break at a show I was working and just decided that that was going to be the day I learned. I'm by no means an expert, but by the end of that time I could stay up way longer than any lights in the city (3-4 minutes). And I had been DEAD convinced that I'd never get it. I guess this is because I never spent more than 10 minutes or so practicing before getting frustrated and riding off. Starting from a standstill is a mistake. I found the best success in just riding around for 20 seconds or so then slooooowly rolling to a stop and holding it there. Good luck!

practice riding very slow ( i find riding next to a walking friend does well). then try small circles, exceedingly tighter and tighter. then stop, and hold. an incline helps as well, as per the link posted above. beyond that, it is literally just practice practice practice. I've alway had terrible balance--thru hockey, football, bikes, etc. if i can trackstand thru a stoplight, then anyone can, and I mean that. It literally just takes going out and practicing every day. after a while, you find that sweet spot. then, as you practice more and more, you get better at staying in the sweet spot. that's really all it is. there's no real like "this is how you trackstand" guidebook, just generalities like "its generally easier to start standing up; most people trackstand with front wheel turned toward foot they skid with forward; lower gears make it easier; etc." probably the best advice i can offer you (besides the front skdding foot equals front trackstanding foot) is to look out ahead of your wheel, into the medium distance (ie stop light, traffic, etc.). The biggest thing to learn is just to not over-adjust...I'm still working on this but I can get through most stop lights at least...
