Has anyone tried the Continental Ultra Sport 3 yet, in either 27 inch or 700 size?

I'm asking because I'm after another pair of 27 inch tyres, and the Ultra Sport 2 has been my tyre of choice. The 2 is still available, but the 3 is being stocked now by a few sellers, although the only 27 inch size Continental are doing now is 27 X 1-1/4.

I'm wary of buying a newer version of a good tyre, based on experience with Michelin Lithion tyres - I had the Lithion 2 tyres on a couple of bikes and really liked them. Replaced them on one of the bikes with Lithion 3s, which were awful tyres, definitely not an improvement.

Was looking at Wal-Mart website today and WOW! 27" tires are NOT cheap there. Panaracer Pasela is over $115.00 each!

I have a pair of continental ultrasports on my Blue Streak for about a year now. I am assuming if they were ultrashort 3 it would be on the label.

I am very happy with the tires but wish I would have gotten 630-28 instead of 630-32.

I'm building up a classic design from a never-used Miyata One Twelve frameset I acquired around 30 years ago. This will be the first time I've been with a bike that ran on a 27" rim size in his century. Getting reasonably priced 27" alloy clincher rims has been a painful and disheartening experience. I settled on the illusive Sun CR-18s. One rim has come in. The other (a different vendor--that's what it took to get a pair) will arrive by the end of the week. Hopefully. Fortunately, tire choices are much better. I settled on a pair of Continental Ultra Sports, having had great luck with Continental tubulars in those far gone days. I'm encouraged to see the good words spared for these and the Continental brand. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences with tires used and available today.

I'm looking hard at the Sun CR-18s. Can I ask what you paid? I see a set on ebay for $144 but the stickers on them look different.

I ordered just rims. I would hope for the price you are seeing on eBay that you are referring to a complete pair of wheels.

Originally I ordered a pair of CR-18 rims (polished, 36h) from Tree Fort Bikes. They charged me $67.98 for the pair ($33.99 ea.), shipping included in the advertised price. Shortly after I got an email stating that only one shipped, back-ordered stock now, and gave me a refund for the second rim. Needing that second rim badly, I went on the hunt for another, and ordered from Harris Cyclery a rim priced at $34.95, with an additional and typical shipping charge of $16.99. The better value is Tree Fort Bikes, but the item wasn't there. Had I purchased both rims from Harris Cyclery, the shipping charge would have been the same, shared between the pair.

I am impressed with Tree Fort Bikes speedy interaction on the order. I spent a while on the phone with the Internet Manager for Harris and found the experience informative and trust-producing. At this point, I would recommend both companies. Here are their URLs:

Just as a follow up to my earlier post I ended up ordering a pair of Ultrasport 3's from Deporvillage; even with shipping from Spain they were cheaper than buying Ultrasport 2's from a UK supplier. Delivery time was good as well - three days.

The tyres look good, and feel slightly lighter than the 2's - I'll be fitting them on my new Paris Sport today, and I'll post an update when I've done a few miles on them.

The 27 inch tyres are wire bead only, the 700c versions are available as folders or (I think) with wire beads.

Incidentally the only 27 inch size that Conti are offering now is 27 x 1-1/4, they appear to have discontinued the 27 X 1-1/8.

Just as an update to this I've had the Ultrasport 3 tyres fitted for a week now.

They roll as well as the Ultrasport 2 tyres, look good on the bike, and grip in the wet and dry is just as good.

In terms of size they seem to be less generous in width than the Ultrasport 2 tyres, which always seemed rather large for their size.

Overall I'm very happy with them - kudos to Continental for continuing to manufacture 27 inch tyres.

I had ordered back in late July a pair of 27 x 1-1/4 Continental Gator Hardshells. They were suppose to arrive this past Tues. Called on the order today--never fulfilled the order, though there was a tracking number and deliver date set. No word from the vendor that there was a problem at their end. I canceled the order and got a refund, turned right around and made the same order from another vendor, costing me an additional $10 USD more that the first order. I swear, these frickin' things are worth their weight in gold, these days.

Have been searching the web and many LBS for many miles around and still coming up empty. Looking for Panaracer Pasela Protite Gumwall 27x1 1/4. All sold out, back ordered, unavailable, don't know when, Covid shipping problems etc. This size seems to be scarce at best and unavailable in any quality unless I want Sunlites. Any one else having the same trouble or know where some decent tires are actually in stock? I consider myself lucky for finding 2 Schwalbe HS159 tires just to get some rubber on a 70's bike I'm reviving until better ones are available. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, MSD

Yep, everyone is. All the old schwinns are coming out of the shed and pressed into service as covid bikes, and there is not enough tires to outfit them all.

Rim tape question: I'm putting some Velox 16 mm on a 27" wheels today first time doing it, does it matter which direction I wrap it? Do I wrap the direction the wheel travels, opposite, or doesn't matter???

I've wrapped the Velox 16 mm in either direction and see no functional difference. Terrific rim tape, very reliable and stays solidly in place.
