Question Shimano BR z57 calipers for Trek Elance

What is the purpose and how does the contraption at the cable stop work? Does it work? Cleaned a pair up for the rebuild of what will be my son's Trek Elance instead of reaming out the rear brake bridge, since the reach is more than the other Shimano tri-color and Campy Athena brakes I had lying around will handle (it is close).

Would the Shimano 600 EX brakes I have be a better brake?

For the record, I assume it is the quick release lever for tire changes, but not sure HOW it works.

I have the same brakes on my Miyata. The picture shows the quick release in the open position. When you push the black lever to the right, it rolls over center to close the caliper. The little silver part in the center of the plastic lever is a latch to keep it from accidentally opening unless your finger is pressing on it.

Yes they are QR levers and I believe the one shown is in the "Open" position. Push it back over towards the center and it sort of locks in place. To open it you push in the little silver tab and turn it outboard.

Good to know! I see you have the 86 Elance in your signature/profile box.

I actually swapped out some nearly mint 600 EX pad types for the dried and worn ones already with the bike. Probably should get a set of Kool Stops or something, but oh well.

FWIW, these are great for 27"-700c conversions. I'm running them on my '81 Miyata 710 and my daughter's Shogun 400. And they DO stop.

This is good to know. Luckily there are no hills in the Lowcountry of SC, where this will be used. Mostly setting it as a quasi-gravel bike with wide tyres and a few upgrades...hoping the shifters are able to handle an 8 speed in the back...I am assuming the Deore will do fine with it.

Mine would only take either 32s or 27 x 1 1/8. IIRC the brake bridge is the limiting factor. I’ve been running 27s on it just to be able to run 6400 series brakes.

I’m running mine with a 50/42/28 triple and something like a 14-30 6 speed with Suntour XC Pro in the front and XC Comp in the back. Stock shifters were 6 speed- haven’t touched them in years.

Nice shape. Much better than this one. Oddly, it does not have the Trek headtube stamp like yours...hmmm...

I'm going to get my son's butt into gear to work on it and perhaps finish it today and tomorrow. It will be a learning experience for him.

Who knows, maybe I'll let him use a set of Campagnolo brifters, hyperglide 8 speed and Deore RD and see how it works! Haha
