I have relatives (and a Zero bike) in Pine Bluff. Have been visiting annually until last year - probably won't make it this year either. The flatness of SE AR allows nice long rides, but I never see another adult on a bike. Had to find a tube and the closest place to get one was an hour drive to Little Rock. Needless to say i ordered online for delivery. Bought the bike from the co-op in LR, north of the river, by the railroad tracks.

I must say i do not understand the wide handlebar trend, am forever looking locally for 36&38s. SomaFab had some rando bars in 38 and the hoods are about 35mm perfect for me. Bought 2.


I do find the place a little..... discombobulating. Probably just the left coaster in me.

Did a 50 mile loop through both reservoirs/parks here in Houston, and out into Cinco Ranch - and a Walgreens pit stop.

ya. I would not think Pine Bluff is much of a cycling area. But on the plus side- Arkansas is getting serious about more bike trails. There will be a 60 mile trail between Little Rock and Hot Springs in the next 3-4 years and a 90
mile trail will be competed on the east side of the state. That one is the delta heritage trail. Some Walmart money is helping to get all this going.

what does Derella mean? Was that a designer for Schwinn? I do favor 80’s Schwinn as that’s what I rode as a kid and I know how to work on them.

and the bike Co-Op you are talking about I believe is Recycle Bikes for Kids, I plan to volunteer there once the pandamic subsides, but they opened for the first time today in a while and I went and loaded up on a bunch of parts - wheelsets, tubes, bars, etc. Love that place - incredibly cheap for some really nice stuff. I may start selling some of their nicer stuff for them on line and giving them the proceeds as they are practically giving away some really nice stuff

Suddenly, it's 75 degrees! Did 50 miles up to Lake Forest. People were out in droves.

Water level was pretty high in the Skokie River.



Leaves are still not out. Morel season is right around the corner and this stand of trees will get visited "later"....

Had to add an auxiliary water bottle. Fountains aren't turned on yet and everything is closed. Had to go the last 20 miles on "E". Grrrr.

Took a great canal path ride today with Mrs. Ged. She rode her 1956 Raleigh Sports three-speed that I finished bringing up to snuff about a week ago. Nice to feel the warm sun again. No photos from it since the joggers and folks were out in strength and we kept moving, but I grabbed a ride along my usual loop out on the Ottawa River parkway / Aviation Parkway paths and road after dinner tonight. Just the bugs and I most of the time. To the right of the photo is an old RCAF base turned civilian airport with a cool museum I'd like to visit someday. The saddle mount loosened up just prior to the photo so the nose of my Brooks is a bit higher than usual. I can't wait to visit a machine shop soon and turn down an alloy single-bolt seatpost I have to replace the Simplex steel original and guts. I'm having a lot of fun with this four-speed hub gear.

Yesterday evening my wife and I went for an 8.6 mile round trip out to Plaza Park on the west side of town. My wife's name is Galina, and she goes by Gala. A couple of years ago I found out that Raleigh was making a single speed women's cruise called the "Gala" so of course I had to surprise her with one... When we lived in the countryside she didn't much like going out on dusty rides to nowhere, but now that we're in town she's quite fond of joining me for little adventures!

It was a very pleasant time out... In addition to numerous domestic geese and ducks around the pond we stopped beside, there were many migrating Canada geese, a rather rare Wood duck couple, a noisy male Great-tailed grackle, and some Mallards. Of course most of them were too far away to take decent photos of with a phone camera!

First couple of warm days in a long time the back trails and roads are finally clear of snow and mud for the first time in 6 month's . So I got to road test some tires I found on a pos salvage bike while a bit ugly the kenda klaws ride nice on gravel.

I also went riding up in the CO high country, but not quite as high up as zukahn1 . It was my first climb up to the Peak-to-Peak highway this year.

Pics aren’t that scenic, but here goes.

Passing the Switzerland Trail, a favorite for MTBers and the 4x4 crowd. You can see a convoy of 4x4s coming down the trail at the upper left.


Further up, nearing the Peak-to-Peak. I liked the contrast between the old barn and cabin, and the mansion on the hill.


I made it to Ward today, the high point on my loop.


Ward’s a rustic town. Another old mining town with a post office and general store. I didn’t stop in due to COVID, just snacked outside, put on some warm clothing and headed back down to the plains.

Rain. Rainy rain rain rain. About an inch yesterday, at least the leaves are getting dense enough that the path is shielded from much of the downpour.
Then the sun comes out, temp into the 70's, gorgeous.

Some may be these days, though very few among the incredible amount that fly through the San Joaquin Valley. This is the heartland of the Pacific Flyway and more than a hundred million migrating birds pass through annually, but the summers here are very dry and inhospitable, and only about 3-5% of the natural wetlands remain. Even the wildlife refuges do not have enough water allocation to keep the artificial ponds flooded during the summer, when evaporation is at its peak.

I've been a dedicated bird watcher for years, and it's incredible how the Canada geese returned here after the drought ended three or four years back. Some probably do stay in places like parks and golf courses, but I've noticed almost none in the middle of summer, personally.

Spaghetti Legs 

Finally, I mean FINALLY, had some real spring weather today, sunny and low 70’s. I think we can all say we are experiencing strange times, but here in Virginia, weather has also been challenging with day after day of chill, damp weather and the few sunny days generally have been pretty chilly and windy. Anyway, I got out on the Blue Ridge Parkway for the first time in months, pleased to find that it was closed to cars for about half of my ride! Pretty cool as the only other times it has been closed are for snow/ice and storm debris. Folks were out walking, jogging on it, so neat to see.

45 miles, 4600 feet climbing. I had wanted to go a little longer but my water was low and no resupply available. Cima Coppi of the day was 3300 feet - a little short of our friends’ rides in Colorado!
