did seller mention source for all the machines they were selling

wondering if from an auction, such as held sometimes by police departments

No idea of source. Maybe an auction. He also had close to 100 sets of skis and poles plus a couple dozen snow boards for sale.

The World Sport is a……KEEPER! I aired up the tires, oiled the chain, cogs, derailleurs, visible cable (but not the rim) and went for a pedal. It functions as a bicycle! It shifts and stops.

Those world sports are nice bikes, especially the later ones. Excellent commuter possibilities.

$13 a piece is cheap, you could just clean them up real well, lubricate everything, replace any known broken stuff, put a coat of nice Ceramic spray on hybrid wax like Jay Leno's at Walmart, that stuff actually tested out very good! Get that paint of the bikes to shine, then sell them for between $75 to $225 which gives you about a 20% margin for negotiation. There are 2 Varsity's for sale near me, one claims his is in like new condition and wants $225, another is in average condition and is trying to get $75, A Continental appears to be in above average condition is trying to sell for $150, so that might help you with the range of prices.

The Peugeot would be in the same ballpark of prices, around $125 or so.

You are going to make a lot more money then what you paid for them. A lot of old farts had those bikes as kids, so the interest has gone up on them, best to get rid of them ASAP before the old farts die off and they younger generation won't have a clue about them, and since the younger generation never rode those as kids the interest will be zero!

Not classic or vintage but saved. Crank is loose but I think it's fixable. Needs a new rear tire and chain looks rough. I'll check stretch and go from there.

Pretty good shape. Warped rim and loose bottom bracket but seems to have been garage kept.

I have been actively selling bikes and projects in a serious drive to narrow down the bike pile around here, but when I saw this today at the local bike thrift store for dirt cheap, I had to pick it up.
Mostly catalog stock ~'73 Motobecane Grand Record.
Unfortunately, the Brooks Professional is destroyed.
Fortunately, all the Campagnolo bits and the Specialites TA crankset are there.
Unfortunately, much of the hardware is rusty.
Fortunately, the seatpost and stem are not stuck.
In a "yeah, right, sure, here hold my beer" moment, I actually aired up the [extremely dry rotted, turning to dust] tires and rode it up and down the driveway a couple times.
Everything got a heavy dose of penetrant, and it can just hang in the basement until.....Clunker Challenge time perhaps?

1981 Fuji S12-S Mixte

A while back I posted a picture of a Fuji frame that I found in the barn of a guy who fixes of bikes, and I just got it back from him yesterday. He tried to get parts from his stockpile as close to the original as he could, but he couldn't find a triple crankset that would work, so I've got a double up front, and only 5 gears in the back, compared to the 18 it once had - a problem I'll be working to fix. It also has a scrape down the non-drive side top tube that has some rust that I'll be working on.

The orginal crankest was a Sugino Maxy 2D 36 x 44 x 53T with 170mm cranks, and the rear casset was a Suntour Mighty-6 (14, 16, 19, 22, 26, 30T) - if anyone has a line on how to find those or equivalents, I would be in your debt!

Also: I looked up the serial number on the bottom bracket in the Fuji database to find out what year it was, and it indicates that it was made in October of 1980, but the 18-speed wasn't available until 1981, nor was the steel blue paint. I guess that makes sense?

An October 1980 build date would be for the 1981 model year. The manufacturers liked to have the new models in the shops for the Christmas buying rush, so they had to start building a few months early.

Bikes: Motobecane Grand Record, Motobecane Super Mirage (3x5 speeds), Motobecane Mirage, Atala (unknown model), Peugeot mixte frame Tourist and Schwinn Sport. A bunch more kids bikes. Most recently a Trek Verve One, tricked up for serious touring.

jemaleddin There was a triple Motobecane crank set on eBay just recently. And a moderately good price for that rare a part. I have messed with a Moto Super Mirage, now an 18 gear 6/3. Obviously not the best gear ratios but with a little practice the bike is a pleasure that I am setting up for a touring bike. Good luck with your hunt.

jemaleddin Don't rule out thrift store bikes as a source for your missing parts. It seems like a fair number of 80's bikes are ending up there these days. That would probably be much cheaper than trying to buy off ebay.
Good luck with the rust repair!

I’m not much of a bike mechanic at the moment and don’t really know how compatible different brands and parts are, but I’m heading down to my local bike co-op where I volunteer tomorrow night to see what guidance and parts they have to offer. 😀

Thanks! I did just see the exact original cassette on eBay and bought it, partly because I had just missed out on a set of cranks with FUJI in big letters stamped into them. 😀 But I will be consulting all the local sources of aging bikes I can.

Speaking of rust, I keep looking at the small amount I have and wondering how much I even need to treat it at this point? I scraped at it a little, but I think I might just get some Evapo-Rust gel and dab a little on, and when it’s done apply some car touch-up paint? Or am I an idiot?

I would definitely do something. Evaporust can help, or one of the rust converter products. If you do nothing, that rust will do more damage. Yes, you'll need to do touch up, but that can be fun too. Testors paints sometimes work. Many of us use nail polish due to the color selections available.
