What company started drillium commercially?
In the early 70s? Lots of brake levers in the 70s have it. Did it start at the brake levers?

Commercially... one has to look to the pro peloton and frame builders who bought out drilling then milling of components as options for their bikes.
Colnago probably gets the first notice, always helps with a winning rider using the equipment.
for the 1975 model years a number of component brands brought out "drilled" brake levers and chainrings, and or pierced crank spider arms.
Sugino, SR, Shimano (brake levers) a follow on of the Super Record brake levers and milled seat post.

One of the first exponents of drilling for lightness was the very famous English Time Traillist Alf Engers, professionally it was almost certainly Eddy Merckx. English framebuilders since the1960s have drilled lugs and BBs for both lightness and aesthetic reasons.

The earliest example of drilled brake levers that I recall seeing was Jacques Anquetil in 1962, though I would not be at all surprised by early examples. The earliest factory drilled levers I recall were MAFAC 2000 and Campagnolo Super Record, both 1974. The earliest factory drilled front derailleur that I recall is the SunTour Compe-V from late 1971. Shimano incorporated thee large holes into the outer parallelogram arm of the Eagle rear derailleur by at least 1972. They also added large lightening holes to the cages of their wide range (i.e. GS series) rear derailleurs at the same time. The earliest crankset with factory drilled chainring holes (and milled spider flutes) that I'm aware of is the Sugino Mighty Competition Custom, which was available in 1973.
Edit: Anquetil in 1962. Not "factory" drillium and likely not the first to do it but the brake levers clearly exhibit five holes, preceding both Anger and Merckx....

I cannot locate but there was a cartoon strip type story of racing on RetroBike a couple years ago. It appeared to be 50s and was about a guy being picked on for being slow, he drilled out bike parts and frame. They cheated to stop him, but he still won. And got the girl!
