The '96 Trek 7000 Paint Project

**Edit To Add**
The SN info at the Vintage-Trek site shows this bike to be a '97. The major clue is the threadless headset.

I wanted to start a thread on this project. Saturday, this too cool MTB came into my posession with an ugly primer red paint that the original owner was apologizing for.

It's now stripped of parts and ready for the 220/400 sanding before applying a primer to settle any compatibility issues. The topcoat is Dupli-Color MC201 blue anodized. The cap color just leapt out and hopped in my hand. I will finish the fork first in case of wanting something different. Yes, I am a rattle can freak because of not having a sprayer for my compressor. If this turns out well I may use this as my personal MTB trail bike. If not, it will be rotated into the rental fleet.

An excellently Deore equipped 3x8, this bike rocks (if one could ignore the ugly paint). The frame makes this one a gem coming in at 24lbs. Dang near C&V roadbike territory.

@OldsCOOL, I'm partial to blue bicycles, my own 7000ZX's Metalized Yellow was quite a departure for my tastes.

Ok, decided to stay with the system "ground coat". Sure glad I did. Look at the Dupli-Color Ground Coat Metallic! Hokey Smokies!!

For some strange reason, I too have dominantly blue bikes. Is there a "show me your blue bike" thread?

Ok, morning paint session on the rigid fork turned out well enough for me to stay with this Dupli-Color system. It really is borrowing from the 1960's Testor's metallic blue that many of us painted our models with.

Dangit. This is one of those threads you want to discover a month after the OP finished their project. Now I have to wait...

Looks gorgeous.

Personally I'm all about white bikes or pastel colored bikes (orange, baby blue, etc.)

Check out the color tone shift in the different light. This paint series is wild.

White (cool) light up top, yellow (warm) light on bottom? Much prefer the color in the white (daylight) light. Pretty regardless, now get to the frame. You've got fans anxiously waiting.

For a while- I had a whole deck full of blue Treks.

78 730
84 420
85 620
86 400
92 820.

I have to go thru my old pix- it was actually kind of entertaining seeing them all there.

My favorite paint has been the blue Imron on my 86 400 Elance. I know this pic doesn't quite capture the depth, but it gives an idea of the shimmer into it...

Sorry guys, all I have is an iPhone 5. And yes, my pics have always sucked.

The paint job is stunning. My next paint project will use this system on my son's '81 PK Ripper. If one is patient, this is the best I have seen since the oldschool handrubbed lacquer candy finishes but with plentious metal flake effect.

A rider's angle showing how nicely the 8sp Acera trigger shifters tuck in. I dont know how anyone can deal with grip shifters and their quirkiness.
