Falling Off A Vintage Bike
Took my recently refurbished Le Croco ten speed for a ride today and managed to completely wipeout while crossing a low curb.Wet conditions and inexperience on very thin road tires. I,m sore but bike made it through unscathed. At 61 i still have some lessons to learn.Ride safe.

That was the week that was. I did it by turning slowly onto a street whose corner was coated with fine sand. All slow mo. Minor bruising on the right knee. Bike unscathed. I've got five years on you guys.

It is getting bad. I'm glad you're OK.
I live basically across the street and down the block from a liquor store.
Two days ago, I fell on the way there, right in the middle of the street, just walking. A car was coming, so I picked it up and wham-yow. That was bad enough, but cars stopped, and ladies asked if I was OK. Then I get into the store, and a young couple comes in and the guy ask "man, are you OK?"
I mumbled something and slowly walked home, head down. I think I'm gonna buy a hoodie.

So while the confessional is open.... most recent "episode": our downtown has a lot of diagonal streets, so lots of 45- and 135-degree corners. So couple months ago, turning left off State St, the light turns green and I start the turn. As I proceed, I look to my left and realize I failed to yield to a couple pedestrians. So as I countinue, I look back and apologize. Meanwhile, some other part of my brain is mentally completing a regular 90-degree turn. Does not compute! I face forward again JUST as my front wheel is about to scrub the curb. Down I go on my right side onto the sidewalk, handlebars knocked off kilter, nice road rash to my right arm and leg, and major bruise to my dignity.

Been there, done that. I fell twice on 2016 Eroica. Damn toe clips. I hate that rule. I landed twice on the same knee and it still hurts 2 years later. I feel your pain.

Don't sweat it. I've wrecked slow speed in water just turning at a T on the path. It happens fast! Felt like someone pulled my front tire out from under me, not even time to get my hands fully in front and hit face first. Scraped nose, chin, bloody lip and badly bruised ego.
My buddy's water accident; broken collar bone and bad concussion. He was moving at a decent clip though.

Hi, My name is Patrick. I am a slow speed crasher.
Unloaded the Colnago from the car in a parking lot a couple of years ago. Been a while since I rode it and I was a bit nervous about how it would feel. Got it going, clipped-in an did a slow, tight turn on a slight hill. Braked part way through to avoid hitting or running over something and the front wheel decided it was time to go the other direction. Boom. Soooooo embarrassing. This is my first confession of this stupid accident!

A few years ago I was out riding in So Jersey, well yeah the U.S. Jersey you know the Garbage State, anyway I am coming up on an intersection with a green light and there is a woman stopped standing over her bike in the lane drinking water. Whilst I am talking to myself about how stupid and dangerous she is being I reach down grab a bottle and have a drink. I reach down to replace the bottle and BAM *#&!@# POW!!! There I am laying sprawled on the road, entangled in my '90 Bianchi Proto no less, closely inspecting the macadam. Apparently the front tyre dropped into a small crack with enough of a shock to jolt my had off the bars send the bike and myself flying. what followed was a slow ride home with a wobbly wheel and some nasty road rash. Fortunately my N.C.O.I.C. allowed me to wear P.T gear into the office for a few days, and thankfully I wasn't on alert duty that week.

Misery/embarrassment loves company: a couple of years back went for a Sunday “trail” ride with wife and son - riding an older MTB but fully clipped in. On our way there on surface streets I thought I would show off a bit and (tried) to pull a nice wheelie - and went right over backwards, still clipped in. Landed flat on my back, which knocked all the wind out of me, bike fully in the air over me. Couldn’t breath, and of course
my family couldn’t breathe for laughing. Worst of all were the two concerned passers by.....I should know better being on the far side of my 6th decade on earth.

Don't feel bad. I fell over in my DRIVEWAY and cracked a couple of ribs six years ago. It happened again, three years ago, while exiting my neighborhood. In front of a soccer mom in her mini-van. No cracked ribs then. Just a skinned elbow.
The second tip-over was on a vintage bike.
Heal quickly, my friend.

15 years ago, I was slowly riding along an older street in downtown Olympia, WA. So busy admiring the old, red, brick paving that I didn't notice the old, curving street car track crossing my path...Down I went, Bam, Ow! Got a few scrapes on me & the bike. Described my crash to a cycling co-worker the next day while telling him I was shopping for a helmet now. He says "I know where you mean, you're very lucky. A cyclist died there a few years ago! Don

Feeling your pain to all of these. I'm 59, 60 in a couple weeks. I recently went for my yearly DRE. Doc had a new system and the nurse was asking a bunch of questions. One of the questions was "have you fallen in the last year?". I chuckled out loud and she got a confused look on her face. I told her that I mountain bike a couple times a month, I fall all the time.

Good to know the OP wasn't hurt but a reminder.
Really doesn't matter what you ride but the law of averages will catch up with one. I'm down at least once every year. Twice this last Summer - off road.
I crashed my new 29er carbon hardtail at a very slow speed. Not a scratch on the bike but I did a pretty matched color of red to my calf. The second wipe out was a bit faster while on my 94 Stumpjumper with drop bar conversion. Washed out gravel ruts to soft sand. Again, no damage to the bike and was more surprised that the Brooks tape cleaned up as if nothing happened.
Though regarding vintage lightweights, this summer I had a friend leading while riding my vintage carbon AlAN. Somehow for a split second he lost concentration and went off the shoulder, came out of the pedal clips, the bike rear did a major left - right and he saved it. Watching it all unfold and save was amazing. He was spooked!
Edit: one more....
Also this last year while riding with a large group at a special C&V event, a very well known custom maker and highly experienced and former ranked racer (will not disclose) went down at a wet rail crossing. And while on the premier NEWLY made show bike. Incredible he and the bike came out unscathed. Recall him saying 'theres always a first'.
Stay safe and enjoy the experience!

Glad the OP is OK and the bike too. I fell on my local bike trail this year-- My first crash. I was riding my Bridgestone and hit a wet curve at the bottom of a hill and the bike went out from under me. I hit the pavement, bounced, and slid about ten feet. Ended up with a big bruise on my hip and a road rash on my leg. Ripped the seat and bar wraps and road rash on the brake levers.

I rarely fall...
without first having crashed. It's not so much the falling as it is the crashing. Last June's crash was completely my fault as I struck my head on a low hanging branch, and then struck my face suddenly on a telephone pole. The best part was that the pole prevented me from falling into oncoming traffic and being smushed. So there's that...

Sorry to hear about all the falls and crashes of fellow BF members. I fell, in 2000, and broke my neck in two places, then had to fend off three teenagers who wanted to rob me. Then, just last year, here in Jamaica, I fell at zero miles per and busted a rib. Still broken and floating around in there, I think. But now worries, still up about and spinning each day, as I cross, back and forth, on the winding roads that snake up the face of the Santa Cruze mountains.

LOL, I did the basically same thing, liquor store parking lot - tried to step across a puddle of water onto the side walk, took a tumble and rolled in front of the entrance to the store. I was surprised they still let me make a purchase.
