Still riding 3-4 times per week, just not posting much. No longer do I have a street SS, just the MTB SS. Also, after reading a few years of posts, there was virtually nothing new being said, so if I check less often, then it is more interesting...

3 straight days in the snow: 1/6 at Apex, 1/7 at Alderfer/3 Sisters, 1/8 at Flying J.
Flipped the rear wheel back to coastie mode for this year & re-installed the brake/rotor....makes it almost easy.

Ah, the Redline Monocog. A true classic. I was disappointed that they discontinued the belt version, the Redline Monobelt. Jenson still has a steel 2014 Redline Monocog 29er on sale for $599 (from $1400) but it's size small. If it was a large, I would buy it just to add to my quiver of singlespeeds. :-)

I had my eye on the Jamis Dragonslayer 26+ since they came out a couple of years ago (I think they're discontinued). The tires are about the same diameter as regular 27.5's but wider for better traction on my sandy trails. Saw that Jensen has them for 50% off so I ordered the Pro and saved over a grand off the regular price. They have sliding dropouts so I will convert it to single speed for trail riding and I'm going to run it geared with some light 27.5 wheels for racing.

Built up a funny single-speed MTB for riding in tight areas. Rollercam brakes under the chainstays and a very narrow cut down dropbar.
12" wide handlebar
Polished old Exage crankset
Lots of fun has been had riding this.
Cheers

all of my single speed experiments are using a mountain bike (style. not sure how much off road punishment they could really take) frame, but two have road bike wheels/tires either on them or planned for them. i just like the particular frame for the idea (fuji folder).
Edit. A pic from facebook (no way to host photos any more). Just took it off the truck so it's still a 15sp.

At the end of the month I'm going to order everything to convert my Dragonslayer. Is there a better kit and cog than the Surly? And what chain size will I need? Surly recommends a 9 speed chain. I assume that will that work on my SLX M7000 ring?

I'm not sure what the details are on the Dragonslayer. Your post caught my eye since I have a Jamis Dragon 20th anniversary single speed. Is the Dragonslayer a steel boost single speedable frame? I'm too lazy to find out. Plus there are different years with different configurations probably.
The tensioning of the rear wheel is the main thing. Chain tensioners, the spring loaded type can work. I would search mtbr.com for comments on Surly parts like that.
As for the sprocket, Surly is good. I have used them. I suppose you're thinking about using a Shimano cassette freehub and a spacer kit on the wheel that came with the bike. That works good, as long as the freehub is steel. If the freehub is aluminum it's better to use as wide a base cog/sprocket as possible. Surly's are not the widest. Endless makes nice wide aluminum ones.
Well, that's all. Good luck. I really ride single speeds a lot, and love seeing different builds.
The 9 speed chain will work fine.

26" plus single speed?!
Zoomed in to the tire size, and it looks like it's 26x3.0.
That's going to be awesome for a single speed. Ride anything.
Making your bike SS is cheap and simple, because the bike is really a single speed at heart.
When those Dragons came out🤩 they caught my eye. But I know that the trend is in the other direction. Ignore treands. You are on the right bike as far as i'm concerned,
