New purchase, 2018 bike vs 2020

Looking at a new mountain bike purchase (have a 2001 Norco HT), question i have, would a 2 year old new bike like the Scott scale 710 plus 2018 vs exemple, since I tested one, the 2020 Trek Roscoe 8, which would be a better purchase/bike? Has the technology improved that they are similar? since they are now similar in price!?

Not using it for extreme rides, some trails, singles tracks, xc and mainly as my city bike for riding with my two young boys (5 & 8). I am currently in Washington DC, I moved from Ottawa Canada, so I'm looking for a 2.6" to 3" tire as when I go back I'll be using it for winter riding as well.

Open to other suggestions, but main question is if the Scott is much better as it was more expensive at the time... Also I haven't found a shop in Washington DC that has one to try out, whereas the Trek or other new bikes I can ensure a good fit.
I also ride on a 2016 Giant advance 2 road bike for summer and commutes.
Thanks
