Peugeot usually had French threaded BB's. Once in a very blue moon you find french bikes with Swiss threads, but I think your Peugeot will have a french threaded BB

More than likely its Swiss. First, determine your bikes year and model. If its post '80-'81-ish its more than likely Swiss, if its post '84-ish it may be BSA (British)

Peruse these links from my website to determine:

1. Year https://cyclespeugeot.com/SerialNumbers.html
2. Model based on year https://cyclespeugeot.com/Catalogs.html
3. Threading https://cyclespeugeot.com/Threading.html

Hopefully its BSA but if its Swiss a BSA may fit..

I concur with Jim. A 1980s Peugeot will not have French BB threading. One can force-install aluminum ISO (24 TPI) cups into a Swiss-threaded (25.4 TPI) BB shell (been there ... done that).

Oops! Sorry! I believe it is entirely possible it will have BSA treading, possibly Swiss. My experience is with older PX-10's and such, and mine had French. My Motobecane Grand Jubilee had Swiss, which is ream-able to Italian. I had mine converted to Italian to facilitate finding BB's.

Under the BB or stanped into the non-drive rear dropout...

Format will be similar to: Y123 45678

Thanks miamijim for those links. My bike's S/N is 2300xxx

So I assume since it's 7 digits, and the first digit is a 2, that it's a 1972. From the catalogs, it appears to be a UE8: https://cyclespeugeot.com/images/1970...-early_UE8.jpg

So now I just need a new bottom bracket and would like a new crankset. Trying to build up a singlespeed. Any help on where I can get these is appreciated.

If it's mid 70s or earlier you need to ignore the serial number conventions IIRC.
but if it is mid to early 70s it would likely be french, 55mm X 1mm. It can be bored out to a more general BB but with a UE8 thats just going to be a singlespeed i would say its not worth the effort.

However if you are lucky you can find a French threaded BB and find a set of stronglight cranks to throw on it. Or you can get some paul cups and convert it.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Other than ebay, where might I find a french threaded bottom bracket? This is supposed to just be a singlespeed/beater, so I'd like to keep things on the cheap if I can.

Search; "Velo Orange French BB"

Measure !.. and if you don't want to bother finding out for yourself * "VO threadless BB"

* as you see above, the blind guesses above are all over the map.

French=35mm 2 RH threaded cups; Swiss, the RH cup is LH thread ; british is 1.370" frame thread : RH left, LH right..

..

If it has rainbow decals and Japanese cranks and components, the cups threading will likely be 1.375 X 24.

Peugeots of the early to mid-80s are notoriously weird, measurement and standard-wise, I've found in my limited experience. I will say I refurbished an Iseran mixte a while back that had Swiss threads. I believe Sheldon has a little section on how to tell.

Only you will know for sure once you remove the bottom bracket. It’s one thing that makes french bikes from that era more challenging, particularly if you want to modify the bike. Keeping what’s on there now is not that challenging at all as the oddball stuff, as long as it is still in good condition, will continue to provide good service for many years to come.

The original Swiss (left) threaded Stronglight fixed cup on my PKN-10 was gold colored, if that helps any. All of the French (right) threaded Stronglight fixed cups I have seen were silver/chrome colored.

Ive tried a few Peugeot conversions from cotter pin to sugino b.b. But the cotter pinned bracket has rivets for the bearings spaced farther apart then most, if not all of my sugino brackets. I have done the force thread, and looked for thick cups, but mostly had success force threading a sealed b.b. in
there
