Phil Keoghan’s “The Ride” documentary on Showtime

Probably old news but has anyone seen this?

I woke up early one morning over the past week (4:30 am maybe??) and was flipping channels and this popped up. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would think most of you would like it as well. So easy to relate to his experiences on the bike. I especially enjoyed some of the Colorado climbs I've done like Wolf Creek pass. I was thinking what Karma for me to wake up early and to stumble onto this show.....

Watch Phil Keoghan’s “The Ride” documentary airing nationwide on SHOWTIMEIn March of 2009, Phil Keoghan, the host of “The Amazing Race” and MS Society ambassador, left Los Angeles on his bike for a 40 day ride across America that covered over 3,500 miles. “The Ride” is an incredible documentary that chronicles Phil’s coast-to-coast adventure where he put his 41-year-old body to the test, brought awareness to MS and inspired thousands along the way. Phil raised $500,000 during the ride for the MS movement, which has now increased to over $1 million.

This is a great awareness opportunity for MS and also a fun way to bring people together to watch the movie and raise funds by hosting viewing parties and asking people to donate funds in place of bringing food, wine, etc.

Entertainment Weekly cites Phil Keoghan’s “The Ride” as a must-see.

I saw it when it came out a few years ago and liked it.

I thought it was going to be a vanity piece but it was inspiring and well done

Hey that was a fun watch. Thanks for the heads up OP. A century or more a day. I think these guys were slightly delirious about the time they got to the Appalachians, lol.

Here it is again on DailyMotion for the watching.

Anyone know why they chose a northern route? I would have thought a southern route would have been easier and more fun due to temperature and terrain.

The southern one is also the old Race Across America (RAAM) route.

Looks like it still is. I suppose the detours were probably for the MS fundraisers.

I watched this with my son a few years ago, a big thumbs up.

To think about adding the pressure of making public appearances, on a schedule, in addition to dealing with all the problems of your first cross-country trek, after a fall, becoming dehydrated, in front of your dad - it's all too bizarre. Phil Keoghan is quite the guy, with a great attitude. I'm sure his dad suffered as much as Phil did.

That visit to the Airstream factory after he wrecked, priceless.

Thanks very much for posting. My mother had MS most of her adult life and died at age 66. (Her mother lived to 95, her father to 88, so MS arguably took 30 years off her life.) MS also killed bicycle expert Sheldon Brown in his early 60s -- I was fortunate to get to meet him in person a few years earlier when I made a pilgrimage to Harris Cyclery in West Newton during a business trip to Boston. My younger son's 4th grade teacher was diagnosed and then went into remission, but it has come back with a vengeance, forcing her to retire early from a career she loved.

I am encouraged by some of the recent advances in MS research:

Just took a long lunch break and watched it. Loved it. At first I was rolling my eyes at the 17lb bikes and full SAG support, but you still have to do the ride --and I've never done it. I want to.

I also recognized the little things that experience teaches you (approaching obtuse RR tracks in the rain has always been a "watchout!" for us on our WI trips, eventually ignoring "road closed" signs because they are for cagers not bikers, etc)

There's a double-amputee doing a coast to coast bicycle ride in this brutal weather. He just stopped by St. Louis today on his trip.

Thanks for posting this link. I watched it today for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a feat to accomplish at 100+ miles per day without a day off at all. I've never done a 100 mile trip yet and cannot fathom what it took to stay on schedule for that amount of time. Very moving film to say the least. Makes me want to ride.
