Cycling in something other than shorts...opinions/options?
For those of you that ride in something other than shorts, I was wondering what options you used.

I can ride in my work pants and long as I only do 20 or so miles a day and 5 days a week. more then that and i need padded underwear. then regular riding shorts on the weekends.

If you are a guy, please don't ride in your Speedo no matter what the temp. North Mississippi isn't that far from Tennessee, we don't want to see it.

Cargo shorts when it's very hot and cargo pants when it cooler. For underwear I use tight fitting boxer briefs.

Cargo pants year round. I use cargo shorts at the gym, however. I need all the pockets.

I'm not nearly as serious as you guys, I usually just ride in jeans or slacks. My longest rides are like 20ish miles, but I just ride around town a lot too.

It's time to get serious about bicycling. You seem to be a young person, so you have lots of upside (room for improvement). First, work towards doubling your mileage. Your butt will get used to it. Don't wear cotton. I wear Columbia PFG shorts over compression boxers, no padding. My gf likes the padding, most people do. My shirts are wicking something or other from a discount store. Better than a cotton t-shirt, IMHO.
Edit: It is my opinion that, as you become more serious about bicycling, you will likewise become more serious about other aspects of your life. Bicycling is life. Life is bicycling. Everything else is s distraction.

Ha. I appreciate this enthusiasm! I'm a 44 year old professional musician and spend most my time making records and touring, but I sure do enjoy riding! I generally either ride around my neighborhood to studios I do some of my work at (or when they were open, bars that I drink at) or do longer rides by the beach or in the park. Occasionally do a harrowing city ride downtown or zoom around the more suburban areas. I have actually worn shorts once or twice and was struck by the increase in comfort.

I will be 68 next month. Our (my fiancee and I) short rides are 42 miles these days. Our longish rides are 52+, but we do feel tired after back to back 50+ mile days. City riding is scary. Seek out the wide open country, my friend. The miles are food for your soul. Don't be surprised if you don't realize this truth for another decade or two.

I like this. I live in a massive metropolis, and while there's some pretty nice places to ride (like 50 miles of beach path), I should find some open roads somewhere out of town and just head out. I know of a few musicians who take their bikes on tour with them and ride in each place and sometimes from city to city if its doable. Thanks for the encouragement!

I always ride in shorts unless it's cold out, then I wear jogging pants.
