Retro-mod Build: Vintage Zullo Meets Modern Campy
I finished the re-build of my Zullo. It started out as an 8 speed SunTour Superbe Pro bike. This was a wonderful build, made with what was considered as one of the best shifting groupos of that era. However, cassettes with wider gearing cannot be found and as it was, it was just not as usable to me as I’d like it. My daily ride is a Ritchey BreakAway carbon, with a full Campy 11 speed Super Record groupset. After years of Shimano from early AX/EX to 7700, I’m now a Campy fan. So, when it came time for the rebuild, it was Campy but which group? I watched the other recent Zullo re-build with anticipation and collected the Super Record group but when the time came, I decided to keep it classic looking with an 11 speed, polished aluminum Athena group and saved the carbon SR for my coming soon... Tesch S-22. Here’s what I started with...
and here it is now, just need to adjust the brakes and take it for a ride.

I am glad you chose traditional cross-laced spokes and high-flange hubs, which look right with that frame (or any frame, for that matter), while providing unbeatable, proven reliability.

Very pretty. Old lugged steel and Campy 10sp triple is my sweet spot, so I can get behind what you have done here.

Beautiful bike, both ways but I’d have a hard time parting with that Suntour.

This is very classy, well done. Noticing the rear face of the seat tube, was the previous/original(?) build done with Vecchio's?

Thanks for the comments and likes. I have adjusted the brakes and took it out for a nice short ride. and it is the best of both worlds, classic looks with modern, efficient and precise shifting. That Superbe Pro was great but I am not a young guy anymore and its gearing relegated the bike to occasional usage, mainly around town. I am looking forward to putting many miles on this bike for many years to come now that it has a much more usable (for me) gearing.
Although I wanted to keep everything Italian, I've always wanted a classic, high flange wheelset and when I came across the Japanese-made, Grand Bois high flange hubset, I couldn't resist. They have exceeded my expectations and spin up very nicely and with their polished aluminum, really look the part.
Vecchio's is one of my favorite bike shops to visit whenever I am in Colorado and that sticker is just a reflection of that and not indicative of their handiwork. I wish I lived in Boulder and was able to have them build it up for me but I am not that lucky. I enjoy stopping in there whenever I am in town and have more than a few of their jerseys that I wear regularly, flying the flag so-to-speak.
Its been overcast the last few days but I'll try to get some photos of the bike in the bright sun. The custom paint is really spectacular when the sun brings out the pearlized top coat. I designed the Zullo lettering with gold outline and drop shadow and it was painted on, not a decal.

Now that's my kind of classic steel rebuild, great job!!! That baby is freakin' gorgeous. Enjoy the ride!
With that said, I'd have been hard pressed to give up the Superbe too, great stuff!
