Motobecanne Phantom Cross. Aluminum frame, Ultegra groupset. Got it on a close out, when Ultegra went from 6600 to 6700.
The stock wheels aren't great, but it works well enough for me, and given that I do about 5 cross races a year, I didn't want to put a lot of money in a cross bike.

Ok..I'll chime in... Back in '84 I think I spent around $650 for a Nishiki and kit from a local LBS.. (I may be off a bit since it was a long time ago). That's it for me; but have purchased a lot of cheap big box store bikes for my kids while they were growing up. It's now my turn to upgrade; so I'm looking at dropping $2,300 on a new CAAD10-3. It should last me quite a.while; however I have heard about the N+1 factor for bike ownership.

Also, my old Trek 510 Ishiwata frame build (w/Cyclone, SR and Shimano 600) was about $450 new in 1979, plus my very recent pickup of a Trek Y-Foil Carbon beam bike was $450 plus about $10 more for the cost of a couple of new tubes.

2013 Giant TCR Advanced SL4: $2000 out the door. Way more then I planned on spending...mostly cause I'm cheap not because I couldn't afford it. But it was demo and bought it a few months before 2015 came out so it was basically a two year old model with "old" 6700 Ultegra. But I do love and and don't plan on buying another bike for a long while.
Other bike is 1989 Centurion Ironman Dave Scott I picked up for $275, added 5700 105 group for $400 and wheels for $200 and sold stock take off parts for about $150. So I'm into that bike for a little over $700 and honestly enjoy it as much as the fancy carbon

My new bike that I'm in the process of building up is a Lynskey R255 w/ Campy Record groupset, Ritchey WCS front end with King headset, H Plus Son Rims laced to Campy Record hubs, and assorted other hand picked items. It's my 50th b-day present to myself, something I've wanted to do for probably 30 years, and if you have to ask how much it cost, then I don't want to tell you. I don't really want to tell myself either.

My first Road Bike I bought in 2012 was a 2011 Marin Portofino with 2300/Sorta components I bought for $495. +tax. Retailed for $749.
Looking to try and sell it for $400. Has 2200 km on it.
Last week I bought a Trek Emonda S4 for $1849 which I have yet to recieve.

For years, I rode a steel Bridgestone RB-1, costing about $650 down from about $800 as an end-of-year model when I bought it in the early 1980s. I came to learn it was considered a classic. After the introduction of carbon fiber bikes, I always wondered if the premium prices of CF, which I considered to be about $2000 was worth the presumed enhanced riding experience.
The Bridgestone was totaled in 2012 in an accident from which I was not sure I would ride again. Well I did, and decided to get a CF. My trusted mechanic said heres the bike you want, knowing my riding style. Well the MSRP was $8000, but he got it for me at half off.
Now, considering the attitude most non- or occasional cyclists towards bicycles and prices, Im frankly somewhat embarrassed to admit to paying so much, sounding like some over-the-top conspicuous consumption. Personally, I can afford it, and it was an offer I could not refuse. Cycling is that important to me and Im fortunate to be able to continue the lifestyle, so that puts it in perspective for me.
Im not that conversant with the technical specifics, nor may anyone asking the price, so the price becomes a common reference to tell what a fine piece of machinery it is. But I would nonetheless admit the price only to a close acquaintance in serious conversation.

Thats a good question, and I have in the past considered the answer for my own bike; at least 9/10. FYA:
My average speed stayed the same, but I think I was hampered by injuries from the accident, and I believe the new bike compensated at least to maintain my average speed. I did note that I was more inclined to sprint (successfully) to beat traffic lights before they turned red. I further craved the smoothness of the ride, including the shifting, making cycle-commuting more pleasurable. Of greatest benefit, while long (greater than 40 mile) rides took the same amount of time as before, I felt much less tired at the end.

2008 Trek 5.2 Madone. Bought it used a few years ago on ebay, came with upgraded wheels (Easton Circuit) and handlebars (Easton EC 90 SL carbon). I changed the saddle to Selle Italia SL Flow . The bike cost $1000.00 plus $99.00 shipping which I felt was a great deal. I honestly would not spend over $1800.00 for a bike just because- so I look to get the most bang for buck.

1990 or 91 Quattro Assi - goal was to build a steel frame on a budget with everything carbon I could - since this pic was taken it also now has a carbon FSA crankset. Total so far about $1300:

I'll chime in here, but I think my bike should always remain in the C&V forum...
A few months ago, I scouted out Craigslist and stumbled upon a sweet deal that, even after these past few months, I still can't believe... Long story, made short: Local college kid graduated and didn't need the bike anymore. It was his dad's old bike, original from 1985, and the dad didn't want it back. The kid put it on CL for $150 and I talked him down to $120 and lo and behold, it was mine!
Believe me, I test rode it, looked it all over, got all the history behind it, etc...etc... and went over it again even closer. Straight up & honest... The bike is darn near MINT and was probably a "garage queen" for 20 or so years. The bike was serviced by an LBS and has new tires and brake pads, and absolutely needs nothing. Well, except replacing the 'cross tires that the college kid had the LBS put on...
Behold - my 1985 Fuji Del Rey (ahem... after I replaced the seat, rewrapped the bars, added a saddlebag, and finally added toe clips)...

Whether you spend $200 or $2k or $20k on your bike doesn't matter. What does matter is that you enjoy it. Too many people will spend uber $$$ just to say "I've got the best there is" and then not ride it.
Personally I don't believe its anyone's business what I spend for my bikes.

Probably 4k on my Altamira. Just under 2 for the bike. Added ultegra brakes and crankset to make it full ultegra, Williams carbon post, selle italia carbon flite seat, zipp service course stem and bars, Reynolds 46mm aero carbon clinchers, and upgraded from the crap stock tires to Hutchinson fusion 3 25mm with ultra light tubes and added a wahoo cadence sensor. Makes me ridiculously happy and better yet, makes me get out and ride it because I love it. I work 14/14 schedule and my 14 off I'd bet I go for 12 rides, I wouldn't have that motivation on a bike I hate.
My other bike I bought used and probably have 2200 in it. DB podium 5, upgraded brakes and crank to make it full 105, Chinese carbon post, forte flow saddle, tokyowheel carbon 38mm clinchers, and my usual favorites Hutchinson fusion 3 tires and ultra light tubes. I ride it when the weather isn't line up to be perfect or I just feel like being on a completely black bike. Both ride great, Altamira is 16lbs and podium is just a hair over 17. Both do everything I could want and I'll ride the wheels off of them.

About 5 years ago $350 for well ridden '03 Colnago Dream then another $400 into pedals, wheels/tires, seat, cassette, cables. Colnago bar tape/bar plugs free, water bottle swag. Put a new big chainwheel on too. A blast to ride. 3 STP's & thousands of local road miles. Some day a frame off overall with a UV clear-coat to protect paint & carbon fiber. Rear D could stand a rebuild but all in all its my bike now. I get wonderful compliments on its gritty roadie "character" all the time.

I don't know exactly, and don't really care. Although I like to think I know the price of things and the value of them in abstract terms, I never could put a dollar "value" on anything in order to say whether it is or was 'worth it.' But I do know whether I was happy to have made a purchase in the end, and if I sort of regret a purchase I'd say it wasn't worth whatever it cost.
I wish I had a nice story like the two bikes that lead this thread and similar others, but I'm just as happy to have become a favored customer at a local shop.
I'm happy with my road bike purchases generally, but often think that upgrading to fancy wheels was not worth it.

Hmmm, I can't claim 100% accuracy on these numbers as I'm going from memory and I'm getting old. This is before any upgrades/changes.
$325 shipped - 2003 Raleigh M60 Mountain Sport MTB w/Deore 9 speed (closeout bought on ebay)
$370 - used 2003 Specialized Allez Sport w/Tiagra 9 speed (sold it)
$1160 - 2004 Specialized Sequoia Elite w/105 9 speed (purchased from LBS. Definitely the most I've ever spent on a single bike)
$650 shipped - 2004 Raleigh Super Course w/105 9 speed (closeout bought on ebay)
$180 - used 2010/11 Giant Roam 2 with 8 speed components
So, in terms of initial outlay and before any swap outs/upgrades I have more in the Sequoia Elite than the other three bikes combined. However, the Sequoia developed a crack in the frame this year, but fortunately Spesh gave me a 2014 Secteur Elite frame as a warranty replacement. I'm about 1/3 done with the build.
