When is it time for a 3 Wheeler . . .?

Well, I had one when I was tiny. Broke it loads o` times, it got welded. The welding fella told me if I broke it again, it`d not get fixed . . .

What goes round comes round, THEY say. And I perceive there are advantages in the 3 wheeled set up . . . . .AAAAAAAAARGHHH! Someone talk me outa this . . . . I don`t wanna get old . .

And the 3 wheel advantages that you discern would be ********************

At near 76yo, I'm not there yet, but my son uses one for balance issues.

Got a beautiful custom built bike that I can't ride anymore because of..........poor balance. Also have a beautiful custom built adult trike......I like to plan ahead.

I also have to walk with the aid of a cane. Like I said........I like to plan ahead.

My wife and I both have tadpole trikes - it wasn't a balance thing with us, it was more of a comfort thing. She's got neck problems, and her trike is the one that gave her the best support.

It will be time when they pry the Cervelo from my cold dead fingers!

Just kidding! I would say it is time when you can't ride the twheeler safely any longer? Medical issues? I will hold out as long as I can!

I'm 70 and my spine doc told me the last thing I need is a trike. He said I needed a nicer carbon bike to accompany my Litespeed. Leaning forward over the handlebars pampers my back.

But if you think you really need a trike, get a good one, like this KMX trike. And if the young lady comes with it, so much the better.

That looks like a high maintenance model.

Trikes can be a lot of fun. Like riding a human-powered go-kart. For myself, though, I'm sticking to 2 wheels for a few more years.

I don't expect to "need" a trike for some years, having just passed 50. But I ride one because it's darn fun! And I'm willing to try bigger climbs with it because, well, whaddaya gonna do - fall over????

There will be if you build one up that way.

My answer to the OP, when you want one or feel that you need one. Maybe now, maybe later, maybe never.

Doesn't come stock with Campy, but I'm sure that could be arranged.

I believe you can convert your bike to a trike. . .that sounds like a good option. . . but not cheap. .

With the standard upright adult tricycles, I don't believe I have ever seen one ridden more than about 8 mph. If it happens that you're riding that speed anyway, then it won't be much different. You may lack some gearing if you're going from a road bike to a 3-speed trike.

They do make upright adult racing tricycles, but they are uncommon, and not for riding on sidewalks at 8 mph. They do make no end of recumbents, as noted above. And, those do come in varying seat heights, they're not all down so low that it's hard to get out of them.

I have a Worksman front-loading tricycle (two wheels in front, back half is a bicycle). One thing that is not immediately obvious is that it is LESS stable than a regular bicycle. If you're stopped or going very slowly, it's more stable- thus the 8 mph line above. If you try to ride too fast, even coasting down minor hills, you may find that you're more apt to wreck than on a bicycle.

You are correct. It's fairly straightforward, not cheap. But I think the purpose built ones are nicer because they can be built with a lower BB/CoG and perhaps a bit more optimized rake/trail geometry.

They do make upright adult racing tricycles, but they are uncommon, and not for riding on sidewalks at 8 mph.
Well, nothing to prevent them from being ridden slowly on sidewalks but yes, they can be so much more than that. Oh yes, so very much more.

My riding style wouldn't tolerate taking a big hit on speed; so no trikes in the immediate future. About the only way I'd justify one in the near-term is if I could convince the Good Wife that this would help me keep my fitness through the winter.
