This is awesome! would be great to be able to paths everywhere our cycling infrastructure is sorely lacking.

This could be great! Getting municipalities to improve bicycle opportunities would be amazing.

Brampton, where I live, sucks dead bunnies as far as real-world biking goes. There are more bicycles on sidewalks than on streets because of this. When I ride to work, there are zero opportunities for me to use a bike lane or a bike path when I go either of the two more direct routes.

I am sure other cities and towns are similar - I wonder how much of this is because we really have a short bike season, or because everything in Ontario is spread out making for longer bike rides. Or is the lack of bike lanes, etc, a reflection of the belief that there are better ways for local politicians to get votes?

I sure hope this comes to fruition. I would love to be able to ride through more of Ontario.

Just look at the success of the Route Verte in Quebec. I live in CT, but would love to take advantage of a similar Ontario route. If the politicians know that it would suck in American tourist dollars, they might take it seriously.

Sorta related: Ontario bike policy needs tune up. Toronto had the chance to lead rather than be dictated to, but they opted to pass the buck so they could later complain about provincial requirements for cyclists that are a waste of money or somesuch nonsense.

Canadian Pacific recently removed the rails and ties from its Ottawa Valley Railway corridor, and local governments are attempting to acquire the land for a rail trail. It has great potential. Using other established trails, it could link Kingston on Lake Ontario with Ottawa in the east and Mattawa, on the edge of the vast Northern Ontario wilderness. In between: gorgeous scenery, lakes, rivers and great little towns, many ideally spaced for bike touring, weekending or day trips.

That'd be cool if it extended to Mattawa or even further west, I live in Sudbury so even starting in Mattawa isn't so bad to go east to Ottawa, south to Kingston and then along Lake Ontario.

Missed the boat to contribute my input. But I remember years ago when Bob Rae was Premier. I was at a fundraising dinner when I sat at the table with Bob Rae and Gerry Philips. I said that we need a bicycle commuter highway from Oshawa to Oakville. I don't like bike trails. They are recreation and not for serious cyclists. We need real commuter paths to give people a real choice between driving and riding. If only a few % of motorists get out of their cars, traffic would be so much better - not to mention health and air quality.

What we also need
Proper bike lanes that safely take you past highway on-ramps;
Highway Traffic Act to disallow lane-sharing. Cars don't share lanes. Motorcycles ride scattered. Why should motorists be allowed to drive in the same lane as cyclists?
Driving schools to teach bicycle safety from a cyclists' perspective. I bet most cyclists also have driver's licenses.

Well, the government is making more noise about this. This announcement today.
I sure hope to see some of this come together before I'm too old to enjoy it.
