Hello guys,

I am a road cycling enthusiast and I appreciate value when I see one. I've had several road bikes but I think that you get what you pay for. Not long ago I bought a very nice (almost NOS) Panasonic 4000 for pennies on the dollar.... $225. I cannot think of anything with 105 for that amount of money but I got it.

So the question is, how much did you spend on your road bike and did you think it was worth it?

This Cannondale SR500 Shimano 105 was free good value I think it was not even ridden maybe 50 miles and hung up for 20 years, completely original down to he tires and bar tape.

WOW That is an insanely great entry in this thread. I am very surprised. I've heard they are a harsh ride. Is it true? I mean compared to the typical 1980-90's cro-molly frame not today's moon rock composite frames.

Total amount spent on concrete parts not labor and shipping costs. That is a variable that does not relate to the bike itself.

We'd have to dig out all the receipts for all the parts and everything. We rarely add it all up when we build a bicycle. Even the bicycles we've purchased "off the shelf" have been customised and modified so much ...

Right now I have a 2013 Roubaix all ultegra, a 2010 lynskey r230 with rival / centaur, a spare generic carbon frame and a smattering of extra parts. All together, cost about 3600.

I've spent a LOT of money on my 3 bikes, especially the newest one. To answer the question - do I think it was worth it? Yes, without a doubt. That feeling I get that keeps me riding it is totally worth every cent. When I see it sitting here in the room with me, all I can think about it going for another ride. Even if I just came back from one.

On a single bicycle or bike-related purchase, about as much as I've ever had in my wallet at any time, I think. The money is gone, the bikes are still here and I expect to keep riding them. Worth it? Why would I worry myself about that?

I don't know. I am getting an Engin Ti and it hasn't been built yet. I did put down a $300 deposit to hold my place in the cue. It should be ready to ride at the end of March or thereabouts. Waiting for the pink/white mix Cerakote sample tube to come from the painter. I have already seen the sea foam green. Looks nice, but I think pink would be more unique if they can get it right. In the end, the thing is going to cost a lot, although the pain will be ameliorated by the fact that I am transferring the wheels from my IF.

I've scored some amazing deals in the past year. I got my road bike from a coworker for $100 a year ago, so I was lucky to get a friendly discount for a practically unused bike. 8 speed 105 groupset, so it holds up well to what's available today. More recently, I got a brand new wheelset for $25 from someone who pulled them off his new bike (although the wheels that came with the bike have 105 hubs, so they may be just as good or better than the colnago wheels). I've done a century and competed in a race on this, and will be doing a ton more in 2015, so I'll definitely have gotten a lot of value out of this.

About $350 originally to build a road bike around the Nashbar aluminum road frame (everything new), subsequently around $250 for better wheels and other improvements so around $600 total. It's been my regular ride for approximately 15,000 miles so I've been pleased with it.

The bike I'm currently riding (and probably will be for quite some time) cost me roughly $7,400 for the frame, fork, Ultegra Di2, Boyd wheels, PowerTap, ProLogo saddle, pedals, and 3T stem and bars.

I put more miles on it every year than I drive and it's the only money-consuming hobby I have. I plan on keeping it 5-6 years.

The bike I am currently riding is a 2003 Steel Marin Argenta bought off of Ebay for $525 or so about 10 years ago. It has a Shimano Tiagra triple group on it. It has been a good and sturdy bike, if a bit heavy. The only upgrade I have made on it is a set of Easton EA70 wheels when a bike shop tore a hole in one of the stock wheels while working on it. I have a deposit down on a new Trek Emonda SL with Ultegra 11 and Race Lite wheels that is going to end up around $3400 when it comes in next month.

Yeah, when I buy a new bike, my husband thinks he gets new camera equipment, so I have to build the cost of that into any bike that I buy.
I spent $1500 to buy my Synapse. I have put probably $1000 into it, though, between saddles, wheels, a cassette, handlebars, and pedals. Only the frame and crankset are original. The seatpost has developed an incurable squeaking noise, and after replacing it twice, C'dale offered to warrantee the frame. The bike is old enough that I have decided to just put up with the noise and use it as an excuse to buy a new bike this spring.

After looking for a bike for a couple months I found a "ghost" bike for a great deal. The older lady said her husband who passed only had it a couple of months and only rode it a handful of times. $1350 since it's a 2012 and sat for over a year.

I spend about 1400$ On my caad 10 back in 2011 and 369$ on a new 2015 giant escape 3 hybrid bike, the caad10 is the most i ever spend on bikes.

Here is my Budget entry into road bike world. 350 for the bike + 80 for Cf fork + 40 pedals + 45 for 5800 front brake and 100 for new tires = 615 and over 700 miles of fun in the last 3 month

Lynskey R230. On its' 2nd groupset. How much? I don't know for sure. $4.5k - $5k? I don't want to know for sure. I know it's been quite a lot of $. Yes, it was definitely worth it. Any $ I spend on cycling is worth it.
