I've been in many races with descents over 50. Anyone who isn't comfortable going that fast shouldn't bother doing any races with any kind of hill in it.

I hit 43 on every ride - a short steep downhill right before home. Fastest was 57 mph on a terrifying bit of road in Austin Texas called Spicewood Springs Road - dead ends at a light on a highway called loop 360. On map my ride, the incline is -20 degrees

Ever do the LA Circuit Race? 2 U-turns per 4 mile lap, usually with a 20+ mph wind going one direction, so half of the course is around 12-15 mph while the other side is 40+.
